West Virginia Black Bears News Release
The West Virginia Black Bears downed the Auburn Doubledays on Wednesday night at Monongalia County Ballpark. The Black Bears used a three run seventh inning to help propel them to a victory in the first contest after the All-Star Break. With the win, West Virginia now improves to 28-29 while Auburn falls to 26-29.
The Doubledays wasted no time in taking a lead on Wednesday night by scoring on an RBI single in the first inning to take an early 1-0 lead. The Black Bears answered back in the second inning by stringing together a couple runs of run of their own. 3B Mitchell Tolman got things started with a one-out walk which was followed by a lined single to left by LF Ty Moore. Later in the inning with two outs, RF Ryan Nagle blasted a triple to deep center field scoring both runners to give the Black Bears a 2-1 lead.
The teams would play four scoreless innings before trading punches in the seventh. Auburn crossed three runs on back-to-back-to-back doubles and a wild pitch to allow the Doubledays to jump out to a 4-2 lead.
SS Logan Ratledge cut the lead in half with an RBI single, scoring Tolman from third. With two outs and runners at third and second, 2B Kevin Kramer battled with a long at-bat, earning a walk to load the bases. Then, C Christian Kelley stepped up to the plate and crushed a ground-rule double down the right field line to give the Black Bears a 5-4 lead. RP Cesiliio Pimentel was shut down the final two innings, preventing Auburn from scoring any more runs to secure the win for the Black Bears.
SP Bret Helton had one of his best performances of the season, tossing 6.0 innings allowing only one run (unearned). Helton struck out three hitters and scattered only two hits while walking none. Pimentel picked up the win (1-1) after putting up three scoreless frames, allowing only one hit and striking out four.
The Black Bears were led offensively by Nagle and Kelley, who each finished with two RBI in four plate appearances. Moore ended the night going 2-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored as well.
The Black Bears and Doubledays will wrap up the two-game series on Thursday, August 20 at Monongalia County Ballpark. P Brandon Waddell will be on the mound for West Virginia with a scheduled first pitch of 7:05 p.m.
