Vermont Lake Monsters News Release

BURLINGTON, VT --- The Tri-City ValleyCats snapped a scoreless tie with seven runs on six hits in the top of the fourth inning and went on to beat the Vermont Lake Monsters 9-2 on Wednesday night in the first of a two-game New York-Penn League series at historic Centennial Field.

After Vermont starter Bubba Derby retired nine of the 10 ValleyCats he faced (five by strikeout) over three scoreless innings to extend his scoreless streak to 13 2/3 straight innings, the first six Tri-City batters in the fourth inning eached against reliever Kyle Friedrichs. A walk, stolen base, Aaron Mizzell RBI single and Bobby Wernes RBI double gave the ValleyCats a 2-0 lead before Kolbey Carpenter added a two-run double.

Friedrichs settled down and got back-to-back strikeouts, but Johnny Sewald added a two-run single and Antonio Nunez followed with a single to knock Friedrichs out of the game. Kevin Ferreras came on and uncorked a wild pitch to score Sewald with the seventh Tri-City run of the inning.

Vermont was held off the scoreboard until the seventh when Skye Bolt smacked an opposite field solo homer to left off reliever Chris Murphy. It was Bolt's third home run of the season and the Lake Monsters league-leading 30th of the season, Vermont added another run in the eighth when Vicmal De La Cruz singled for his second hit of the game, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a Richie Martin RBI groundout,

Dexture McCall, who was named MVP of the New York-Penn League All-Star Game on Tuesday, went 3-for-5 with RBI singles in both the seventh and ninth innings for the ValleyCats on Wednesday. Wernes was 3-for-4 and Sewald had two runs to increase his league-leading total to 40, while Ryan Deemes (1-0) allowed three hits with five strikeouts over five scoreles innings for the win and Murphy two runs on five hits over the final four innings for the save.

The loss snapped a seven-game home winning streak for the Lake Monsters, who had not lost at Centennial Field since August 4th. While giving up nine runs on 11 hits, four Vemront pitchers combined to strikeout a season-high 15 batters (most by Lake Monster pitchers since 15 vs. Jamestown on August 6, 2013). Ferreras allowed one run on two hits with two walks and five strikeouts in 3 1/3 innings, while Cody Kurz one run on two hits with three strikeouts in his two innings.
