Lowell Spinners News Release
LOWELL, MASS. - The Lowell Spinners entered the All-Star Break with just one hit in losing the second game of Sunday's doubleheader. The team came out of the two-day break without much improvement, allowing three first inning runs to the Brooklyn Cyclones, picking up just two hits offensively as they fell, 3-1, Wednesday Night at MCU Park.
Brooklyn (26-30) got to Kevin Steen right out of the gate. After a single and hit batter to lead off the bottom of the first, Vinny Siena tripled home both runners with a flare past the dive of Tate Matheny in right field. A wild pitch would score Siena and gave the Cyclones a 3-0 lead.
Lowell (30-27) got a run back in the top of the second on back-to-back doubles by Josh Ockimey and Matheny. A line-shot from Austin Rei down the left field line went just foul with two outs before Rei struck out to end the inning with the Spinners trailing 3-1.
The score remained that way throughout the remainder of the game, as neither team picked up a hit after the fourth inning, combining for 23 strikeouts.
Steen (0-1, 2.75) calmed after the rough start, allowing the three first inning runs but following up with three scoreless. He struck out seven. Danny Zandona was lights out in four solid innings of long relief, striking out six while allowing just one walk.
The game was not without fireworks, as Brooklyn manager Tom Gamboa was ejected during the coaches meeting, and Cyclones leftfielder Jeff Diehl, who struck out four times in the game, entertained fans by twice losing the grip on his bat, once breaking a bat over his knee following a strikeout and finally earning an ejection after picking up the Golden Sombrero.
The Spinners look to earn a series split Thursday as they conclude the brief two-game road trip. Javier Rodriguez (0-4, 7.23) gets the ball in search of his first win for the 7pm first pitch.
