Seven-Run Fourth Inning Lifts 'Cats to 9-2 Win
August 19, 2015 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
Tri-City ValleyCats News Release
BURLINGTON, VT - Aaron Mizell, Bobby Wernes, Kolbey Carpenter, and Johnny Sewald all added RBI's in a seven-run fourth inning, as the Tri-City ValleyCats went on to defeat the Vermont Lake Monsters by the score of 9-2 on Wednesday night, at Centennial Field, in Burlington, Vermont.
Playing for the first time following the 2015 New York-Penn League All-Star Break, the ValleyCats and Lake Monsters actually entered the top of the fourth in a 0-0 tie.
However, Tri-City quickly ended the scoreless deadlock, as the first six batters in the top of the fourth frame all reached base, and all scored.
The rally started with Antonio Nunez walking on a 3-2 pitch from Vermont right-hander Kyle Friedrichs. The ValleyCats shortstop then stole second base, before scoring on an RBI single by Mizell, who then scored on a double to deep left field by Wernes.
After Wernes went to third base on a single by Dexture McCall, and Pat Porter reached on a hit-by-pitch, Carpenter doubled down the left field line to drive home Wernes and McCall, putting the 'Cats on top 4-0.
Three batters later, Sewald drove home Carpenter and Porter, before coming around to score on a wild pitch, stretching the Tri-City lead to 7-0.
By the time the top of the fourth inning had concluded, the 'Cats had set season-highs for most runs in an inning, hits in an inning (6), and batters coming to the plate (11) in an inning.
McCall went on to add to Tri-City's offensive onslaught, adding RBI singles in both the top of the seventh, and top of the ninth frames. The first baseman, who was named the Most Valuable Player of the New York-Penn League All-Star Game on Tuesday night, finished Wednesday's contest by going 3-for-5, with the RBI's.
Wernes (3-for-4 with a double and RBI) and Mizell (2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored) also had multi-hit games, while Sewald (1-for-4 with two runs and two RBI's) and Carpenter (1-for-3 with a run and two RBI's) had strong nights as well.
The dominant offensive display by the Tri-City batters turned out to be more than enough to support a very solid pitching performance by the right-handed duo of Ryan Deemes, and Chris Murphy.
Getting the start was Deemes, who struck out five batters, while allowing only three hits in five scoreless frames, en route to earning his first Tri-City victory.
He was relieved by Murphy, who went on to pitch the final four innings of the game, striking out three batters and earning in his professional save in the process.
The ValleyCats and Lake Monsters will return to Centennial field at 7:05 p.m., on Thursday night, to wrap up this two-game set. On the mound for Tri-City will be LHP Zac Person (1-4, 9.00), with RHP Angel Duno (0-0, 1.80) getting the start for Vermont.
