
Cutters Battle Mother Nature; Fall to State College

The Williamsport Crosscutters fell behind in the first inning against State College on Wednesday night and wouldn't be able to stage a comeback against the Spikes. The Skies opened up in the middle of the fifth inning as Mother Nature brought on a 34 minute rain delay. The Cutters hold a 3 ½ game lead over the Spikes for 1st place in the Pinckney Division.
The Crosscutters would see State College jump out to a 1-0 in the bottom of the first inning against Tyler Gilbert. He entered the game having struck out seven batters in back to back starts. The Spikes tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the second inning tallying five hits against Gilbert. A lengthy rain delay would end the night for Gilbert after throwing two pitches to start the bottom of the fifth inning.
Williamsport would turn to another left hander in Denton Keys to work against the Spikes. Keys picked up mid at bat where Gilbert left off to get the first out of the inning. Keys worked a scoreless inning before allowing a pair of unearned runs to score. The Spikes stretched their lead to 5-0 after a couple of tough bounces went against Williamsport. Sutter McLoughlin pitched a scoreless bottom of the eighth inning allowing one hit while striking out one. The game saw a combined 17 strikeouts without a single walk being issued.
The Cutters finished the night with four hits as the first would come from Zach Coppola in the top of the 4th inning.
Gilbert took the loss for Williamsport dropping him to 3-3 on the season. Gilbert allowed three runs on seven hits while striking out two batters. The two teams will meet up again on Thursday night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 P.M. as the Cutters look to keep hold of first in the Pinckney Division along with the best record in the New York Penn League.
