Crazy 7th Inning Leads to Loss

MORGANTOWN, WV - The Doubledays fell to the Black Bears 5-4 in a close one in Morgantown on Wednesday night. The loss dropped Auburn to 26-29 on the season while improving West Virginia to 28-29.

In the first inning, the Doubledays took an early lead after Victor Robles used his speed to reach on an error by the Black Bears' shortstop. The speedy centerfielder advanced to second on his team leading seventh steal. Max Schrock dug in after Robles and extended his hit-streak to 10 with an RBI single up the middle that scored Robles to give the 'Days an early 1-0 lead.

Jefry Rodriguez started for the Doubledays and worked a quick bottom of the first, retiring the first three Black Bears hitters with groundouts to second. After one the Doubledays led 1-0.

The Doubledays went down in order in the second before the Black Bears took the lead in the second. After Daniel Arribas grounded out, Mitchell Tolman walked. Tolman then advanced to second on a single by Ty Moore before Logan Ratledge struck out. With two outs and runners on first and second, Ryan Nagle drilled a triple into right center to score the pair and give the Black Bears a 2-1 lead.

The third through sixth innings went quickly as neither team recorded a hit or scored a run, the Doubledays didn't put a runner on base, and the Black Bears put two guys on, but neither scored.

Finally in the top of the seventh, the offense returned when Bret Helton was taken out of the game as the Black Bears' starting pitcher. Sean Keselica came into the game to face Auburn's 3-4-5 hitters Kelvin Gutierrez, Rhett Wiseman, and Diomedes Eusebio. The lefty gave up three straight doubles and the Doubledays took a 4-2 lead.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Black Bears quickly responded. Tolman led off the inning when he reached on an error. Moore and Ratledge then hit back-to-back singles to put runners on first and second with Ratledge's single scoring Tolman and making the score 4-3. The pair then advanced to second and third on a successful hit and run when Nagle grounded out to second. After Casey Hughston struck out, Connor Overton replaced Sam Johns on the mound. Overton walked Kevin Kramer before giving up a two-run double off the bat of Christian Kelly. The double scored two and put the Black Bears up 5-4 after seven.

The eighth and ninth innings went quickly and quietly as the Doubledays fell to the Black Bears 5-4 in game one of the two-game series.

Jefry Rodriguez started for the Doubledays and didn't earn a decision with the following line: 5 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, and 5 K's. Sam Johns took the loss for Auburn with the following line: 1.2 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, and 3 K's.

Bret Helton was brilliant as West Virginia's starter, but he didn't earn a decision with the following line: 6 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, and 3 K's. Cesilio Pimentel earned his first victory of the year with the following line: 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, and 4 K's.

Game two of the series is tomorrow night at 7:05 PM and Taylor Guilbeau (1-2, 4.94 ERA) starts for the Doubledays against Brandon Waddell (0-0, 1.29 ERA) for the Black Bears.
