
Traverse City Tops CornBelters 6-2

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. - The Normal CornBelters, presented by Illinois Corn Farmers, fell behind in the fourth inning and lost 6-2 to the Traverse City Beach Bums on Wednesday night at Wuerfel Park.
The CornBelters opened the scoring in the third inning when Sam Judah singled and Pat Dockendorf walked to lead off the frame. Both were sacrificed ahead a base, and Judah scored on a sacrifice fly to center by Ty Wiesemeyer.
The Beach Bums finally reached starter Jacob Liedka in the fourth with their first baserunner, as two walks and a hit with one out loaded the bases. All three runners scored on a base hit, walk and fielder's choice to give the Bums a 3-0 lead going to the fifth.
The Belters struck back in the sixth inning when Andrew Cohn led off by reaching on an error followed by a single by Ty Wiesemeyer. Chico Gomez walked to load the bases, and Cohn scored on a sacrifice fly by Steven Felix to cut the deficit to 3-2, but a strikeout and a foul-out ended the threat.
Traverse City quickly extended their lead to 4-2 as Chase Burch led off the sixth with a home run to the left-field berm.
The Bums pushed their lead to 5-2 in the seventh when Kyle Eveland led off with a double to the left-field corner, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on a fielder's choice. Jose Vargas made it 6-2 with two outs with his third home run of the series and his 15th of the season on a blast to left field.
Jacob Liedka (1-4) took the loss while Bums starter Bennett Whitmore (3-2) picked up the win. Matt Miller pitched the final 3.2 innings for his second save.
Earlier on Wednesday, the Frontier League announced three CornBelters will be on the West Division squad playing in next Wednesday's All-Star Game at the Corn Crib, outfielder Alvaro Ramirez, catcher Pat Trettel and shortstop Pat McKenna. Ramirez makes his second consecutive trip to the All-Star Game, and is currently batting .281 with 18 RBI, second-most on the team. Trettel has a batting average of .248, is third on the team with 17 RBI and shares the Belters home run lead with five. McKenna carries a .270 batting average with 16 RBI and three homers, but will miss action in the game due to injury. The All-Star Game managers will announce their additions to the squads on Thursday.
The series in Michigan concludes on Thursday with a 6:05 p.m. Central first pitch and a 5:50 pre-game on WJBC.com. Left-hander Tyler Stovall (1-4, 5.72) starts for the CornBelters against Beach Bums right-hander Brooks Belters (5-0, 3.07 ERA).
