Miners Take Series at Home

Marion, IL - The Miners take a much needed series at home as they defeated the River City Rascals 4-3. Miners starter Shawn Gilblair pitched eight innings, his longest outing of the season. He gave up five hits, three runs (all earned), three walks and struck out seven.

The Rascals took the lead in the top of the first inning off Gilblair as Rascals second baseman Doug Sanders hit a RBI double to give the Rascals a 1-0 lead. The Miners bounced back in the bottom of the second inning off Rascals starter Tony Marsala. After a two base error by Rascals short stop Bobby Burk to put Mendez on second, with two outs Sean Harrell hit a RBI single to make it a 1-1 game. Cannon Lester then hit a RBI double to give the Miners the lead 2-1. Sean Coughlin capped off the inning with a two out double after Lester to give the Miners a 3-1 lead.

The Miners added another run off Marsala in the bottom of the third inning when Carlos Mendez hit a RBI double with one out to give the Miners a 4-1 lead. River City added two runs in the top of the fifth inning off Gilblair, a RBI triple by Curran Redal and a RBI single by Doug Sanders. The Miners would go on and win the game 4-3.

Albert Ayala pitched a perfect ninth to earn his first save of the season. Jason Sullivan of River City pitched a scoreless eighth inning.

The Miners improve to 26-18 with the win. The Miners still trail Traverse City in the Eastern Division by four games. The Miners look for the series sweep tomorrow night at Rent One Park. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm.
