Rascals Drop Series to Miners
July 4, 2012 - Frontier League (FL)
River City Rascals News Release
Marion, Ill. - The Rascals jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first for the second straight night but an error led to three runs in the second inning for Southern Illinois who staved off a River City comeback to hold on for a 4-3 win, dropping the Rascal record in one-run games to 6-9.
Doug Sanders followed a single from Curran Redal with a double down the left field line to put River City (24-20) up 1-0 before Tony Marsala (2-4) took the mound.
The Miners (26-18) caught a break to start the second inning when shortstop Bobby Burk overthrew first base allowing Carlos Mendez to reach second. Marsala induced two groundouts, keeping Mendez at third base before an infield single tied the game at 1-1. Consecutive doubles followed, plating two more Miner runs en-route to a 3-1 lead. Southern Illinois added a run in the third after a leadoff walk to stretch their lead to 4-1 but River City battled back against Sean Gilblair (6-2).
Eric Williams worked a two-out walk in the fifth before Redal tripled and Sanders followed with a single to close the score to 4-3. That would be the last hit for River City in the game with Charlie Lisk the only batter to reach the rest of the way, drawing a two-out walk in the eighth.
Marsala allowed just three hits the next four innings and finished with seven innings of work, allowing four runs, one earned, on seven hits and five strikeouts but was tagged with the loss.
River City tries to avoid the sweep tomorrow when Keli'i Zablan (3-2, 3.79) takes the mound against the Miners' Darrin Tew (2-2, 5.51). First pitch is set for 7:05. You can catch all the action on Westplex News-Talk 1280 AM KYRO or online at www.westplexnewstalk.com.
NOTES:
