Asheville Tourists News Release

ASHEVILLE - Connor Graham gave the Tourists the start they desperately needed but for the second night in a row the bats could not come through. Asheville dropped its third straight decision to the Columbus Catfish by a 2-1 score at McCormick Field on Monday night. Graham (9-5) was the hard luck loser for the Tourists, allowing just a pair of runs on four hits through seven solid innings of work. He struck out four and walked three - walks that came back to hurt Graham and the Tourists. Greg Sexton drew a leadoff walk against Graham in the third inning and moved to second on a fielder's choice. With two outs, he came around to score on Henry Wrigley's RBI single to give the Catfish an early lead.

The next inning, Reid Fronk drew the walk to open the inning. After a Sexton single and another walk to Stephen Vogt, the Catfish picked up their second run on Quinn Stewart's sacrifice fly to take a 2-0 lead. Asheville would answer in the bottom half of the frame, loading the bases on Michael Mitchell's single and back-to-back walks to Bo Bowman and Kevin Clark. With no one out, Helder Velazquez drove in a run with a groundout, but fly outs by Brian Lapin and Warren Schaeffer ended the Asheville threat.

Unfortunately for the Tourists, the fourth inning represented their last big threat of the inning. Their offense mustered only one other hit past that point - a Mitchell single in the sixth. Mitchell went 3-4 at the plate and was the only Tourist to record a multi-hit game. The Columbus bullpen retired the final 12 hitters of the game and was lights out at the end for the second night in a row. Jesse Darcy (5-3) picked up his first win since June 26th, tossing six superb innings of one-run baseball, sprinkling just five hits while walking two and striking out five. Justin Garcia followed with two scoreless innings of work before handing things over to Austin Hinkle, who picked up his ninth save of the season.

The Tourists will try to avoid the sweep on Tuesday in the series and homestand finale on Kids Eat Free Night, compliments of Papa John's. Kids will receive a free slice of pizza and their choice of Pepsi product, all from Papa John's Pizza. Cory Riordan (7-7, 3.48) comes off the seven-day disabled list to start for Asheville and will face Alex Cobb (7-7, 3.34). First pitch is at 7:05 p.m. and the game can be heard on the Tourists flagship station WRES-FM, 100.7. The Asheville Tourists are the Single-A affiliate of the Colorado Rockies. Tickets are available by contacting the front office at (828)-258-0428 or on the website, www.theashevilletourists.com.
