Hagerstown Suns News Release

KANNAPOLIS, NC - A strong outing by Brad Meyers and a two run blast by Mark Gildea gave the Hagerstown Suns (20-24) a 4-1 victory over the Kannapolis Intimidators (19-22) on Monday night.

Suns starter Meyers (8-5) navigated his way through six innings at Field Crest Cannon Stadium as he spread ten hits by the Intimidators but only allowed one to score.

Seven strikeouts and stellar defense helped Meyers get through a few Intimidator scoring chances.

Before Meyers took the mound, Valerio Heredia led off with the game with a walk off of Kannapolis starter Miguel Socolovich. Heredia stole second and a Jose Lozada's sacrific bunt moved Hereida to third.

Tim Pahuta then hit a sacrifice fly to left fielder Jim Gallagher to give the Suns a 1-0 lead.

Brent Morel and Gallagher both hit singles to right field in the first with one out but a 6-4-3 double play off the bat of Mark Fleisher ended the inning.

In the top of the fourth, Suns left fielder Bryan Miller hit a single and scored with Mark Gildea as he blasted his fourth homerun of the season to right field.

In the bottom half, Christian Marrero hit double off the left field wall and moved to third on a throwing error by Miller.

Sergio Morales grounded to third basemen Stephen King who threw out Marrero at the plate. Morales scored on a RBI single by John Curtis to cut the Suns lead to 3-1.

Meyers found trouble in the fifth as he loaded the bases with one out. Morel and Gallagher singled and Fleisher walked. Then Meyers stuck out Marrero and Morales to end the frame.

Socolovich ended his night taking the loss as he tossed five innings, gave up three runs on six hits and stuck out five.

Lozada added one more insurance run for the Suns in the seventh. The shortstop hit a double to right and moved to third on a ground out by King. Kannapolis reliever Hector Santiago then threw a wild pitch to score Lozada.

Dan Leatherman came in for relief in the seventh and pitched the rest of the way. Two Intimidator batters reached in eighth with no outs but a foul out by Morales and a double play ended the bid for a comeback.

Leatherman's retired the side in the ninth to pick up the three inning save and the victory for the Suns.

The final game of the series is set for Wednesday August, 5th at 7:05 p.m.
