Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
Charleston, WV- Despite Delmarva's early offense that gave the Shorebirds a 2-0 lead in the first, West Virginia was the better team on Monday night in Charleston as the Power ran away with a 9-4 victory. The 3-4 combination of Eric Fryer and Steffan Wilson combined to go 6-9 with 4 RBI, and Zealous Wheeler's three-run homer in the fifth off Luis Noel broke a 3-3 tie, chased Luis Noel from the ballgame, and sent the Power on their way to their 30th win of the second half. West Virginia only won 32 games in the entire first half of the season.
Ryan Adams' RBI single in the first inning put the Shorebirds on top as Adams continued his hot hitting. He finished 2-4 to improve to 7-12 in the three games in West Virginia. On the other hand, the Shorebirds second baseman made two more errors, his 46th and 47th of the season, to aid West Virginia to the victory. It was Adams' eighth multi-error game of the season.
Luis Noel struggled through the early innings, yet the Dominican right-hander had only allowed two runs through the first four innings as West Virginia left a bunch of runners on base. In the fifth inning, Noel would not be quite so fortunate. Fryer launched the first pitch he saw over the left field wall to tie the game at three, and after back-to-back singles by Wilson and Caleb Gindl, Wheeler blasted his second go-ahead three-run jack of the series to give the Power a 6-3 lead.
Delmarva managed very little offensively during the last three and two-thirds innings against Rob Wooten, who earned his second professional save with the strong performance out of the West Virginia bullpen. Wooten allowed just one hit, a one out single in the ninth, and struck out five Shorebirds during his outing. The Shorebirds now turn their focus to Tuesday night as they try to split the four-game series with the Power. Now trailing by six games in the second-half standings, Delmarva needs a getaway day win over the Power to avoid a 3-1 series loss that would send the Shorebirds to seven games back in the Northern Division.
