Albuquerque Isotopes News Release
SACRAMENTO -- Arnold Leon allowed one run in 6 2/3 innings, and two relief pitchers did the rest, as the Sacramento River Cats defeated the Albuquerque Isotopes, 4-1, on Thursday night at Raley Field.
The Isotopes (63-50) have lost two straight and are now tied for first place with Oklahoma City in the PCL's American Southern division. OKC has won seven in a row. Round Rock remains one game behind the leaders.
Jemile Weeks led the offense for Sacramento (59-54), which is now two games behind Las Vegas in the PCL's Pacific Southern division. Weeks manufactured a run in the first inning with a walk, his 14th stolen base, and scored on a Shane Peterson sacrifice fly. Weeks tripled home a run, on the 10th pitch of his at-bat, to score Ryan Ortiz for a 2-0 lead in the second inning.
Topes starter Angel Castro (6-3) labored through 3 2/3 innings, needing 98 pitches. He allowed six hits and three walks, while striking out five, although he did minimize the damage.
Reliever Sean White stranded two runners in the fourth inning, but allowed two runs in the sixth inning. Hiro Nakajima hit a sacrifice fly and Peterson singled home a run.
The only Albuquerque run scored in the fourth inning. Chili Buss hit a two-out double to right field and scored on a Justin Sellers single up the middle. Leon allowed seven hits and one walk, and struck out three, in his sixth start at Triple-A since a promotion from Double-A.
The Topes put two runners on base in the seventh inning with two outs to chase Leon, but reliever Hideki Okajima retired Dee Gordon on a flyout to center to retire the side.
River Cats veteran Brian Gordon, who spent the first 10 seasons as a professional as an outfielder and was converted to pitcher after the 2006 season, converted his 10th save in 11 tries in the ninth inning.
The finale of the four-game series is Friday night. Matt Palmer starts for Albuquerque. Andrew Werner goes for Sacramento. First pitch is at 8:05 pm Mountain Time and all the action can be heard on 610 "The Sports Animal" with Josh Suchon on the call.
