Memphis Redbirds News Release

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Memphis Redbirds held on for a 4-2 win over the visiting Tucson Padres in the finale of a four-game series in front of 10,445 fans on Friday night at AutoZone Park.

Memphis (55-59) took three of four from the Padres for its sixth winning series at home this season and first since the club took three of four from the cross-state rival Nashville Sounds from July 4-7. The Redbirds pitching staff held Tucson to only seven runs and a .182 average against and over the four games.

Carlos Martinez allowed one run on two hits in five innings to improve to 4-2. He walked four and struck out three with 93 pitches, 56 for strikes.

Catcher Audry Perez and outfielder Justin Christian each had two hits from the bottom of order. Leadoff hitter Mike O'Neill added two hits for the third straight game.

Memphis took a 1-0 advantage in the bottom of the third as Perez extended his hitting streak to five games with a leadoff single. The backstop would move around the bases to score on a pair of base hits from O'Neill and Kolten Wong.

After a leadoff walk by Dean Anna in the next frame, Tucson tied it up it with its first hit of the ballgame off of Martinez, an RBI double off the left field wall by Gregorio Petit. Later in the inning, Christian made an incredible run-saving catch in center field to end the inning and prevent further damage.

Memphis went back ahead for good in the bottom of the fourth thanks to a hit by pitch and pair of singles by Christian and Perez. Outfielder Chris Swauger extended the Redbirds' lead to 3-1 in the next inning with his first homer of the season, a one-out blast that barely cleared the right field wall.

Tucson's Chris Robinson doubled off Jorge Rondon and scored on a Dan Robertson RBI single in the seventh for the clubs final run.

Memphis added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth inning thanks to an infield RBI single by O'Neill before Fernando Salas converted his fifth save with scoreless ninth. Deryk Hooker fanned two over his perfect inning.

The Redbirds continue their homestand by welcoming the Las Vegas 51s (Triple-A Mets) to AutoZone Park for a four-game set, their lone series this season. The Redbirds will be celebrating the kick-off to the Memphis Tigers athletics season in the new American Athletic Conference, presented by the University of Memphis and TNStars College Savings 529 Program.

Right-hander and former Memphis Tiger Scott McGregor (4-7, 5.10) will toe the rubber for Memphis against Las Vegas righty Matt Fox (5-3, 4.60).
