Tacoma Rainiers News Release
TACOMA, Wash. - The Tacoma Rainiers stumbled early and fell late to the Omaha Storm Chasers 4-2 at Cheney Stadium on Thursday night.
Omaha bolted to a 2-0 lead with a two-run frame in the top of the first inning. First baseman Ben Broussard singled to center field with one out, clearing the way for infielder Irving Falu and Christian Colon to score.
The Rainiers deficit doubled in the third. Catcher Manny Pina lined a single to right field that plated Brian Fletcher with one out, and Gorkys Hernandez hit a sacrifice fly that cleared the way for Pedro Ciriaco to score two batters later.
Tacoma's lineup interrupted a stretch of 14 consecutive innings without scoring a run after notching two in the fourth. Third baseman Scott Savastano hit a sacrifice fly, and Carlos Triunfel drove in Stefen Romero with a single to right field.
In the bottom of the ninth, Ty Kelly drew a walk and Franklin Gutierrez laced a double to put runners on second and third with two outs, but first baseman Jesus Montero struck swinging to seal a sixth consecutive defeat and the team's third in a row to Omaha.
James Paxton (7-9) surrendered four runs - three earned - on seven hits over three innings en route to suffering his ninth loss in his team-leading 22nd start this season. The left-hander struck out three and walked one.
Relievers Chance Ruffin (2.0 IP), Brian Sweeney (2.0 IP), Carter Capps (1.0 IP) and Bobby LaFromboise (1.0IP) combined to hold the Storm Chasers to three hits and struck out eight over six innings of work out of the bullpen.
The Rainiers (60-53) host the final game of their four-game series with the Storm Chasers (56-57) at 7 p.m. tomorrow, August 2nd. Right-hander Andrew Carraway (6-4, 4.45) is slated to start for Tacoma against Omaha's left-hander Danny Duffy (2-0, 4.50).
