Iowa Cubs News Release
Salt Lake City, UT - The Salt Lake Bees (64-49) broke open a tie game with five runs in the sixth inning and beat the Iowa Cubs (51-62) 9-3 at Spring Mobile Ballpark tonight. The Cubs have lost 10 straight road games and a season-high seven in a row overall. The Bees lead this series 3-0 and have won nine straight at home.
Edgar Gonzlaez got the Cubs off to a good start with a solo home run in the top of the first inning off Bees' starter Barry Enright. It was Gonzalez' second home run of the season and ended a streak of 15 straight games without a first-inning run for the Cubs. It also ended a streak of 33.1 consecutive scoreless innings for the offense while Barret Loux is in the game. The Bees tied the game with a run in the bottom of the second on an RBI single by Robbie Widlansky off Loux.
The Cubs regained the lead on a two-out, RBI double by Jae-Hoon Ha in the top of the fourth inning. Ha has hit safely in four straight games to tie his season-high. The Bees came right back to tie the game in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI single by Roberto Lopez.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, Loux (4-6) gave up hits to six of the seven batters he faced before coming out of the game. Five of those men scored. Widlansky and Luke Carlin drove in the first two runs with RBI singles and both scored on a triple by Drew Heid. Matt Long capped the rally with a base hit that also extended his hitting streak to six.
Alberto Cabrera came in for Loux and got out of the sixth inning with a groundout and a strikeout, but gave up the Bees' final two runs in the bottom of the seventh. Lopez had another RBI single, giving him four RBI in the series. Heid picked up his third RBI of the night with a sacrifice fly.
Gonzalez picked up another RBI with a single in the seventh that knocked Enright (6-5) out of the game after 6.2 innings, but the Cubs didn't threaten against the Bees' bullpen. Buddy Boshers pitched an inning and a third of scoreless relief and Josh Judy gave up just a single to Donnie Murphy in a scoreless ninth. Murphy finished with three hits in the game and has hit safely in 16 of his last 18 games.
The Cubs and Bees wrap up this series tomorrow night at 8:05 Central time at Spring Mobile Ballpark. RH Nick Struck (5-8, 6.29) will start for the Cubs against LH Dustin Richardson (4-1, 4.41) for the Bees. The game will be broadcast live on AM 940, and streamed live at iowacubs.com, with the On-Deck Circle Pre-Game Show starting at 7:45.
