Top Pick Stifles Bowie in Chill of Erie Night
May 4, 2019 - Eastern League (EL1)
Chesapeake Baysox News Release
Erie, PA - Facing the number one pick in the 2018 draft in Casey Mize, the Baysox battled early but fell 6-1 on a frigid Saturday evening in Erie, PA.
Mize was making his home debut after a scintillating Eastern League debut in which he threw a 9-inning, complete game no-hitter to begin his Double-A career. Alexis Torres ended that threat with an infield single in the third inning and the Baysox got on the board against Mize in the fourth.
TJ Nichting led off the frame with a hard groundball single to right field. He got second on a Rylan Bannon groundout. And with two down scored as Brett Cumberland's one hopper into the shift was misplayed by Erie 2B Chad Sedio allowing Nichting to come around to score. It would be Bowie's lone tally on the night.
Erie bested the Baysox via the long ball. Daniel Pinero homered off of a 3-2 changeup from Bruce Zimmermann with teo down in the first to give Erie a 2-0 lead. Kody Eaves lifted a two-run home run to right in the fourth to make it 4-1 Erie. And Pinero's second of the night, and third of the year, finished the scoring putting the SeaWolves up 6-1 in the seventh inning.
Erie has outhomered the Baysox six to none in the last two games. Cristian Alvarado worked well out of the pen for Bowie throwing 2 and 1/3rd scoreless frames. It was his second consecutive scoreless appearance.
The series will conclude Sunday, May 5th at 1:35 p.m. with RHP Marcos Molina looking to help Bowie gain a series split. Coverage begins 20-minutes prior on wnav.com, baysox.com and via the Tune-In App by searching Baysox.
And the Baysox head home for a weekend series with Richmond beginning Friday, May 10th at 7:05 p.m. Get tickets at 301-464-4865 or purchase online at baysox.com.
