Binghamton Rumble Ponies News Release
PORTLAND, ME - The Binghamton Rumble Ponies pulled out a 5-4 win in 10 innings over the Portland Sea Dogs Saturday afternoon at Hadlock Field, taking three of the first four games of the six-game series. Binghamton took the lead in the 10th as Ali Sanchez grounded into a fielder's choice, with third basemen Bobby Dalbec's throw home not in time, scoring Arismendy Alcantara.
After blowing the save in the ninth, Riley Gilliam (1-0) closed out the tenth to get the win. With the Ponies up by 1, and runners on first and second with two out, the game ended on a pickoff play as lead runner Brett Netzer was caught stealing third after trail runner Jake Romanski was trapped in a rundown.
The Rumble Ponies were up 4-2 heading into the bottom of the ninth, but Portland scored two off of Gilliam. With runners on second and third with one out, CJ Chatham hit a sac fly to right that scored Aneury Tavarez from third, and advanced Marcus Wilson to third. That set up Dalbec as the next batter, and he delivered ripping an RBI double to left scoring Wilson to tie the game.
After slow starts, both starters settled into a rhythm. Ponies lefty David Peterson bounced back from a poor outing last Monday allowing only 2 runs, 1 earned, and striking out a season-high nine over five and two thirds innings in the no-decision. Sea Dogs southpaw Darwinzon Hernandez, who made his MLB debut with the Boston Red Sox on April 23, allowed only 3 hits and 2 runs over five and two thirds. Reliever Adam Lau took the loss.
The series concludes Sunday afternoon with the second doubleheader of the series. First pitch of game one is at 1:00PM on Newsradio 1290 WNBF and the Binghamton Rumble Ponies channel on TuneIn. Game two will follow 30 minutes after the conclusion of the first game. The Horizon Federal Credit Union Pregame Show begins at 12:45PM.
