Sacramento River Cats News Release
Albuquerque, N.M. - Powered by seven combined RBIs from right fielder Austin Dean and designated hitter Ka'ai Tom, the Sacramento River Cats (11-8) held on for a 9-7 victory over the Albuquerque Isotopes (7-12) in the series opener on Tuesday.
After falling behind 3-0 in the first, Tom ignited the offense with a second-inning solo home run, his first big fly of the season.
One inning later, with the bases loaded and two outs, Dean lined a three-run triple to hand the River Cats the lead, and scored on Tom's single to left field.
Tom continued his early claim for Player of the Week with a second home run in the fifth, this one being a two-run shot. The left-handed hitter is batting .354 with six runs, four doubles, 11 RBIs, and a .970 OPS in 13 games.
First baseman Wyatt Mathisen provided a key insurance run with a solo homer in the eighth. The Isotopes would go on to score three runs in the bottom of the ninth, bringing the tying run to the plate before righty Taylor Williams ended the game with a strikeout.
Right-hander Raynel Espinal (0-0, 1.42) looks to make it four in a row with his first win of the season on Wednesday. He'll take on former Sacramento hurler, righty Zach Neal (1-2, 6.59), at 5:05 p.m. (PT). Listen to Johnny Doskow call the game online at rivercats.com or on the MiLB First Pitch app.
Additional Notes
Rehabbing San Francisco outfielder LaMonte Wade Jr. looked good in his second start for Sacramento, going 1-for-1 with a leadoff single, run, RBI, and a walk in three plate appearances.
Following a rocky first inning, which led to three earned runs, left-hander Enmanuel De Jesus bounced back with just one base runner allowed over his final 3.0 innings. He finished the day with four strikeouts and three earned runs on three hits and two walks in 4.0 frames.
Catcher Jhonny Pereda is one of Sacramento's hottest hitters, going 2-for-4 on Tuesday. He is 6-for-10 in his last three games with two runs and four RBIs.
