Toledo Home Win Streak Snapped

November 29, 2002 - ECHL (ECHL)
Toledo Walleye News Release

(Toledo, Ohio) The Toledo Storm lost their first home game this season to the Peoria Rivermen, 2-0, as Peoria's goaltender, Mathieu Chouinard, got the better end of the scoreboard against Storm goaltender, Brian Finley, in the first match-up in ECHL history featuring two first round draft picks defending opposite nets. Despite the loss, the Storm remains in first place in the Northwest Division with a 15-4-1=31 record, but the second place Rivermen pulled within five points (12-4-2=26) with two games in hand.

Peoria got all they would need 27 seconds into the game, when the Rivermen got the puck deep in Toledo's defensive zone, and Ryan Finnerty took control of the puck on the end wall. He found Randy Rowe planted at the right side of the goal, and Rowe quickly chipped the puck over the left shoulder of Storm goaltender, Brian Finley (the first round pick of the Nashville Predators in 1999), who went quickly down into the butterfly-splits. Rowe scored his second of the night at the 6:09 mark of the second period, while Peoria was on the power play. Jason Lawmaster kept the Storm's clearing attempt in the high slot and found his defensive pairing, Derek Booth, on the left point. Booth moved towards the top of the left circle, and then passed cross-ice to the top of the right circle, where Rowe was waiting for the one-time slap shot. Rowe's shot slipped underneath Finley to give the Rivermen a two goal cushion.

Over the course of the hockey game, the Storm were able to create several good scoring chances and ended up outshooting the Rivermen 32-25; but Chouinard (Ottawa's first round pick in 1998), was to the task on this night, as he handed the Storm their second shutout of the season.
