Steelheads Battle Past Aces

BOISE, Idaho - It took some work, but the Idaho Steelheads managed to outscore the Anchorages Aces 5-4 before a sold out crowd of 5,017 at the Bank of America Centre tonight.

The Steelheads dominated the play in the first period taking 17 shots to the Aces 3. But, Anchorage scored first when Carl Drakensjo found the open net and put one past Blair Allison at 2:04. The goal was assisted by Dave Csumerik and Yvan Corbin. The Steelheads would tie it up when Wes Dorey rolled a soft one by Ryan Person at 6:59, assisted by Cory Morgan and Scott Swanson. Ruslan Batyrshin answered back 32 seconds later with his first goal of the year, with Dean Larson and Drakensjo get the assists. Chris Marinucci was not content to allow the Aces to keep the lead and scored on a feed from Ben Keup at 8:48. Joe Rybar put the Steelheads up for the first time of the game with a backhander at 13:44 and end the first period 3-2.

Both teams came out hitting hard in the second period. Anchorage knotted the game at 3:55 with a goal from Corbin, assisted by Larson and Don Martin. The second period would end tied at 3 as Anchorage shut down the Steelheads league-leading power play with five blown opportunities.

Anchorage scored first in all three periods, and B.J. Young gave the Aces the lead for the third time in the game with a power play goal at 7:15. Daniels and Csumrik collected the assists. The lead was short-lived however, as the Steelheads would again tie it up when Keup got an unassisted tally past Person at 11:58. Marinucci scored the game-winning goal at 14:58 fed by Michal Pinc and Martin Vasut.
