San Diego Gulls News Release
SAN DIEGO -- Jason Ralph's goal midway through the third period proved to be the game breaker as the Bakersfield Condors defeated the San Diego Gulls 4-3 Friday night, before 8,404 at the San Diego Sports Arena.
Bakersfield has now won eight in a row and remains undefeated on the road. San Diego, meanwhile, drops under .500 again and falls five points behind the Condors for second place in the West Coast Hockey League.
The Condors (11-4-0) jumped out of the gate scoring two goals on their first three shots. Jason Jackman got things started for Bakersfield flicking a shot over the shoulder of Trevor Koenig at 1:45. Nate Anderson earned the assist on Jackman's first goal of the season. Less than two minutes later, Jimmy Drolet notched his third goal with a shot that deflected off the skate of San Diego defenseman Dan Cousineau.
San Diego (8-9-1) cut the lead in half with a power-play goal at 12:59. Sylvain Deschatelets got his third marker, deflecting a pass between his legs and past Kevin St. Pierre. Assists were credited to Dennis Purdie and Mark Pederson. Immediately following the goal, fans showered the ice with thousands of teddy bears in support of the Gulls' third annual "Teddy Bear Toss." The teddy bears will be donated to "Hope for the Holidays," a national charity benefiting underprivileged children.
The Blue and Orange knotted the contest with its second straight power-play goal two minutes into the middle frame. Purdie, who's been snake-bit all season, finally scored his first goal, redirecting a pass from Pederson behind an outstretched St. Pierre. R.J. Enga, who started the rush, received the second helper. Dean Tiltgen put San Diego ahead, 3-2 with a short-handed goal at 11:33. The tally came off setup passes from Mike Garrow and newcomer Cory Cyrenne, who made his Gulls debut tonight.
Bakersfield came right back however, drawing even with a power-play tally at 18:59 of the second. Paul Willett, the Condors' leading scorer, recorded his fifth goal, finishing off a tic-tac-toe setup from Shawn Byram and Drolet.
Ralph put the Condors up for good at 13:37 of the final stanza with his ninth goal of the year. Ralph was stationed right at the bottom of the slot, took a feed from Christian Skoryna and one-timed it past Koenig. The second assist went to Willett. St. Pierre and company stymied the Gulls attack the rest of the way en route to winning his league-high 11th game of the season.
Notes: St. Pierre came into the day leading the WCHL with a 1.84 goals against average and .936 save percentage... Cris Classen, who was with the club during its 2001 Taylor Cup run, re-signed today... Rookie winger Mike McGhan and center Brian Morrison also inked a contract in time for tonight... Cyrenne was activated from injured reserve... Jamie Black missed his third straight game tonight with a deep ankle bruise... Marc Busenburg and Rob Voltera remain with the American Hockey League's Hershey Bears... San Diego plays 13 of its next 19 games at home...
