Fort Wayne TinCaps News Release
Fort Wayne, Ind. - The Fort Wayne TinCaps have known for months they would play in the postseason. On Sunday, they found out their first-round opponent will be their intrastate rivals, the South Bend Silver Hawks (Class-A Arizona Diamondbacks). South Bend clinched a playoff spot Sunday to earn the right to play the TinCaps in a best-of-three series beginning Wednesday, September 9th. Fort Wayne went 16-4 against the Silver Hawks this season.
"We are thrilled to host playoff games in our first year at Parkview Field," TinCaps president Mike Nutter said. "The San Diego Padres have shown a tremendous commitment to put a winning team on the field in Fort Wayne and we hope our fans come out to give our team that little extra boost with an electric atmosphere."
Game 1 of the series is scheduled for 6:30pm on Wednesday at South Bend's Coveleski Stadium. RHP Simon Castro (10-6, 3.33 ERA) is the projected starting pitcher for Fort Wayne. Castro is 2-1 with a 4.09 ERA against the Silver Hawks this season. All four of South Bend's wins against the TinCaps this year have taken place at Coveleski Stadium. Game 2 is slated for 7:05pm on Thursday at Parkview Field in downtown Fort Wayne. "Thirsty Thursday" drink specials will be in effect with a post-game fireworks show on tap. RHP Erik Davis (16-6, 3.64 ERA) draws the start for the TinCaps. Davis is 2-2 with a 5.32 ERA against South Bend. If necessary, Game 3 is scheduled for Friday at Parkview Field at 7:05pm. RHP Chris Fetter (2-1, 2.22 ERA) is the projected starter for Fort Wayne; he has not faced the Silver Hawks.
The TinCaps went a perfect 8-0 against South Bend at Parkview Field during the regular season. However, South Bend won three out of four in the teams' most recent series in early August at Coveleski Stadium.
The winner of the series will take on the winner of the Great Lakes-West Michigan series beginning Saturday, September 12th.
Fort Wayne clinched its first playoff berth since 2006 by winning the first-half Eastern Division championship, going 45-25 before the All-Star break. The 45 wins in a half were a franchise record until the TinCaps won 47 games (as of Sunday evening) on their way to a second-half championship.
Fort Wayne and the West Michigan Whitecaps (Class-A Detroit Tigers) finish the regular-season schedule Monday at Fifth Third Ballpark in Comstock Park, Michigan. TinCaps RHP Stiven Osuna (9-9) draws the start against Whitecaps RHP Anthony Shawler (7-4) in a 2:00pm start.
