Lansing Lugnuts News Release
SOUTH BEND, Ind. - Johermyn Chavez went 5-for-6 and the Lansing Lugnuts (28-40; 54-83) used their biggest inning of the year to seize a shocking lead and hang on to an 11-10 victory over the South Bend Silver Hawks (31-37; 58-78) before a crowd of 9,972 in the Lugnuts' home finale at Oldsmobile Park.
Entering the fifth inning trailing 6-1, the Lugnuts scored nine runs on eight hits and two walks against South Bend starter Ryan Cook (11-11) and reliever Bayron Zepeda. In the span of three pitches, Justin McClanahan lined a game-tying two-run single, Kenny Wilson jabbed a go-ahead RBI single, and Ryan Goins drilled a two-run double to put the Lugnuts up, 9-6. Chavez followed with a single to right-center, scoring Goins and capping off the rally.
Chase Lirette (4-3) pitched three scoreless innings to earn the win for Lansing, though it did not come easily.
South Bend scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth against Yorman Mayora to cut what had been a five-run lead to a single run. Mayora stiffened, retiring A.J. Pollock and Reynaldo Navarro with the potential tying and winning runs on base to end the game and notch his fourth save.
The Lugnuts went 11-for-21 with runners in scoring position in the game, which featured 21 total runs, 29 total hits, and 21 total runners left on base.
In defeat, Chris Davis and Alfredo Marte each homered for South Bend.
The Lugnuts close out the 2009 season with a 2:00 p.m. Monday matinee at South Bend. Right-hander Joel Carreno will start for Lansing, while the Silver Hawks' starter is still to be determined.
