Fort Wayne TinCaps News Release
Comstock Park, Mich. - The Fort Wayne TinCaps shut out the West Michigan Whitecaps, 6-0, Sunday at Fifth Third Ballpark. Vince Belnome drove in three runs and RHP Chris Fetter delivered five scoreless innings to lead Fort Wayne to its 93rd win of the season.
Belnome, who piled up four RBIs in Saturday's game, went 3-for-5 and tacked on three more RBIs to continue his strong play against West Michigan. The pitching staff fired its 18th shutout of the season, adding on to a record set earlier this season.
The TinCaps jumped ahead in the top of the 1st with a two-out rally. Jaff Decker drew a two-out walk, then Belnome pounded an opposite-field triple to the wall in left to make it 1-0.
In the 3rd , Fort Wayne again pounced with two outs. Belnome ripped a two-run single up the middle to push the lead to 3-0. After a walk to Cole Figueroa, Allan Dykstra cracked a two-run double to the gap in right-center to give the TinCaps a 5-0 lead.
Fort Wayne finished the scoring in the 6th . Robert Lara yanked a double down the left-field line and scored on Kevin Hansen's bloop single to right, making it 6-0.
Meanwhile, Fetter kept the Whitecaps hitters in check, scattering four hits and a walk over five innings with three strikeouts. LHP Rob Musgrave and RHPs Alexis Lara and Brad Brach combined on four shutout relief innings.
Fetter (2-1) was the winning pitcher. Whitecaps RHP Rob Waite (1-1) absorbed the loss after allowing five runs in four innings.
The TinCaps ran their record to 93-46 for the season, 48-21 in the second half. West Michigan tumbled to 81-58 overall, 38-31 for the half.
Fort Wayne and the Whitecaps (Class-A Detroit Tigers) finish the three-game series and the regular-season schedule Monday at Fifth Third Ballpark. TinCaps RHP Stiven Osuna (9-9) draws the start against Whitecaps RHP Anthony Shawler (7-4) in a 2:00pm start.
