The Burlington Bees shut out the Cedar Rapids Kernels, 4-0, on Saturday night at Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Cedar Rapids. Angel Castillo was 2-4 with a double as the Kernels out hit the Bees, 7-6, but the Kernels stranded 10 runners and were 0-8 with runners in scoring position.
Burlington starter Tim Melville (7-7) allowed four hits and struck out six over five innings for the win as Cole White and James Thompson held the Kernels to three hits and struck out five over the final four innings to seal the shutout. Kernels starter Ryan Chaffee (8-8) allowed three runs on four hits, walked five and struck out four over six innings in taking the loss.
Hilton Richardson had a two run double in the second inning as Fernando Garcia and Juan Graterol combined for four of Burlington six hits. The Bees scored their other two runs on wild pitches by Chaffee and Mike Rocco.
The Kernels and Bees play again on Sunday evening at 5:05 pm with the gates opening at 4:00 pm. The first 2,000 fans through the gates receive a free 2009 Kernels Team Photo from Copyworks. It's also a 104.5 KDAT Sunday Family Day - fans can get autographs from the Kernels and enjoy the balloon artistry of Papa Balloon on the concourse. After the game, there's a live auction featuring sports memorabilia and following that, a spectacular FIREWORKS show.
