Chiefs Snap Two Game Skid, Collect 80th Win of Season

September 6, 2009 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Peoria Chiefs News Release

Clinton, IA - The Peoria Chiefs picked up their 80th win of the regular season and snapped a two-game slide with an 8-3 win over the Clinton LumberKings on Saturday night. The win moves the Chiefs to 42-25 on the second half and 80-56 on the season. The 2009 squad is just the third Chiefs team in franchise history to win at least 80 games in a regular season and the first since 2002. After both teams left runners at third base in the first inning, Peoria broke out on top in the third against Clinton's starter Derrick Saito. Jose Valdez led off the third with a bunt single and he easily stole second. On the next pitch, Valdez stole third and scored standing up when the throw from catcher Henry Contreras sailed into left field. With one down Ryan Flaherty drew a walk and Rebel Ridling singled. Kyler Burke made it 2-0 with a single to right and he took second on an errant throw home by Danny Carroll. D.J. Lemahieu doubled the Chiefs lead with a single up the middle as both Burke and Ridling scored for a 4-0 Chiefs lead. Jeffy Antigua kept the LumberKings off the board through five innings though he did pitch in and out of trouble on two occasions. After escaping the fifth, he gave way to the bullpen but not before the Chiefs added two more. In the sixth, Mario Mercedes doubled off Blake Nation and Nelson Perez crushed his 11th home run of the season for a 6-0 Chiefs lead. Clinton scored off reliever Manolin DeLeon in the sixth and seventh, taking advantage of some rare wildness from the Chiefs' right-hander. DeLeon hit two batters in the sixth and the LumberKings first run scored on a bases loaded sacrifice fly. In the seventh, DeLeon issued a pair of walks and gave up a run on a fielders' choice. Jovan Rosa returned to the Chiefs lineup after missing 20 days on the disabled list with a strained quadriceps. He put the Chiefs on top 7-1 with a single to right in the seventh to score Burke. The Chiefs added another run against Daniel Cooper in the eighth when David Macias singled home Valdez. Clinton threatened in the ninth and scored one against Ryan Buchter before ending the game with two runners on base. Antigua (4-0) set himself up for a likely first round playoff start with five shutout innings. The lefty walked three, allowed three hits and struck out three. DeLeon gave up two runs on one hit while walking two over 1 2/3 innings. Buchter allowed a run for the first time since July 8. He surrendered two hits and walked two while striking out two over 2 1/3 innings of work.
