Bandits Streak Ends
September 6, 2009 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Quad Cities River Bandits News Release
The Quad Cities River Bandits winning streak ended at eight games on Sunday night courtesy of a 4-1 loss to the Kane County Cougars at Elfstrom Stadium.
Quad Cities (31-37, 61-77) starter Jorge Rondon established a new career high with eight strikeouts, but Franklin Hernandez put together a three-hit night and accounted for three of Kane County's (34-35, 75-64) four runs to pace the home team. The two clubs will wrap up the 2009 regular season with a 1:00 p.m. Labor Day matinee on Monday afternoon.
The Cougars started the scoring in the bottom of the second. Tyler Ladendorf led off the inning with a hard-hit groundball through the left side of the infield and scored when the next batter, Hernandez, lined a triple the other way down the right field line. Later in the frame, Hernandez crossed the plate on a fielder's choice groundout as Kane County went ahead by a 2-0 score.
The River Bandits answered during the next half-inning. D'Marcus Ingram drew a one-out walk and stole second, while Jason Stidham followed with a double to right-center that cut the deficit to 2-1. A single gave Quad Cities men at the corners with just one away, but a strikeout followed by a pickoff at third base prevented them from tying the score.
Kane County extended the lead with an unearned run in the fourth, as Hernandez singled to left-center and stole second base. After advancing to third on a wild pitch, the runner scored on an error when a bouncer with the infield in eluded third baseman Jermaine Curtis.
In the top of the sixth, the River Bandits had another prime scoring opportunity end fruitlessly. Curtis led off the inning with a blast to left that was initially ruled a home run, but after a conference between the umpires was changed to a double. A single by Xavier Scruggs put men on the corners. But Rich Racobaldo sent a bouncer to the third baseman and Curtis hesitated before breaking for the plate, eventually retired in a rundown between third and home. A pop-out and a fielder's choice groundout ended the inning shortly thereafter, stranding a pair of runners and maintaining the 3-1 deficit.
Mathieu Leblanc-Poirier (5-7) picked up the win with six strong innings, allowing one run on five hits. He fanned four and walked three while stranding six River Bandits runners in as many innings.
Kane County added another unearned run in the seventh to stretch the lead to 4-1 and reliever Trey Barham picked up where Leblanc-Poirier left off. The southpaw fired off three shutout innings to earn his second save of the year.
Jorge Rondon (1-5) suffered the loss for Quad Cities despite a solid outing. The 21-year-old righty struck out a career-high eight and allowed just four hits over six innings, but three runs - two earned - and two walks were enough to do him in.
UP NEXT: The River Bandits wrap up the 2009 campaign with their final game of the season on Monday afternoon, a Labor Day matinee against the Kane County Cougars at Elfstrom Stadium at 1:00 p.m.
