Dragons Race for Playoffs Ends on Sunday

September 6, 2009 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Dayton Dragons News Release

Midland, Mich.-The Dayton Dragons race for the playoffs ended on Sunday afternoon as they lost to the Great Lakes Loons 8-2. The loss kept the Dragons one game behind the South Bend Silver Hawks with one game to play in the 2009 Midwest League season. But since the Silver Hawks win the tie-breaker, Sunday's loss mathematically eliminated the Dragons from post-season contention.

South Bend clinched the Eastern Division wildcard slot and will play the Fort Wayne TinCaps in the first round of the playoffs starting Wednesday. Dayton fell to 30-38 in the second half with the loss. Their overall record is 58-80.

The Loons built a 6-2 lead over the first three innings, getting a pair of solo home runs in the second from Nick Buss and Jaime Pedroza against Dragons starting pitcher Shea Snowden.

Snowden (1-1), making just his third start, suffered the loss. He allowed eight hits and six runs in two and one-third innings with two walks and no strikeouts.

Dayton collected 10 hits but went 2 for 13 with runners in scoring position.

Carlos Mendez went 3 for 3 to lead the Dragons. Josh Fellhauer had two hits and scored a run.

Mendez raised his batting average to .306, ensuring that he will finish the season above the .300 mark. Only one other Reds minor league player, former Dragons outfielder Chris Heisey, is batting above .300 among players with at least 300 at-bats. Heisey has split the season between Double-A Carolina and Triple-A Louisville.

The Dragons play at Great Lakes on Monday at 3:05 p.m. in the season finale. Justin Walker (0-2, 2.75) will start for Dayton.
