Great Lakes Loons News Release
MIDLAND, MI - Nick Buss and Jaime Pedroza homered and the relief corps pitched six shutout innings as the Great Lakes Loons rolled to an 8-2 win over the Dayton Dragons in the penultimate game of the regular season on Sunday afternoon at Dow Diamond. With the loss, the Dragons were eliminated from playoff contention and the South Bend Silver Hawks claimed the final playoff spot in the Midwest League Eastern Division.
Buss ripped a leadoff home run in the bottom of the second inning, and Pedroza also homered later in the inning as the Loons broke a 1-1 tie and took a lead they would never relinquish. The dinger by Buss was his 10th off the year, making him the fifth Loon to reach double-digits in home runs this season.
Great Lakes added three more runs in the bottom of the third inning to chase Dragons starter Shea Snowden. Jerry Sands had an RBI double and Esteban Lopez tacked on an RBI single to make it a 6-2 Loons advantage through three innings. Snowden (1-1) allowed six runs on eight hits in just 2.1 innings of work.
Loons starter Ethan Martin allowed both Dayton runs in his three innings of work on three hits. He walked none and struck out six. Nathan Eovaldi (3-5) picked up the win with three scoreless innings of relief, working out of a one-out bases loaded jam in the sixth in his final inning of action. Steve Smith pitched two innings, and Cole St. Clair extended his scoreless streak to 14 innings with a 1-2-3 ninth inning.
Kyle Russell had an RBI double to extend his RBI total to 102 and he stole three bases to reach 20 steals for the season, becoming the first player with both 20 homers and 20 steals in a season for the Loons. Anthony Hatch went 0-for-4 to end his hitting streak at 12 games.
The regular season finale comes with a Labor Day matinee on Monday at 3:05 p.m. against Dayton. The Loons will give lefty Jon Dutton (0-2, 3.94) his first start of the season in tomorrow's contest.
