MONDAY: Gabriel Arias extended his on-base streak to a season-best 9 games, but the TinCaps were shutout, 1-0, for the second consecutive day against the Hot Rods. Ben Sheckler made his 3rd start of the season tossing 5 innings, allowing 3 hits, 1 walk, and 1 run while striking out 3.

JULY CONUNDRUM: With 1 game left in July, the TinCaps are currently 9-17 (.346) in the month. Although the record shows differently, the TinCaps, statistically, are having one of their best months of the year. Fort Wayne is batting .248 at the plate, which is the highest batting average in any month this season for the team. On the mound, pitchers hold a 2.85 ERA, which is the 3rd lowest team ERA in July in the Midwest League.

POLISHED PATINO: At 18 years old, Luis Patiño is the 2nd youngest pitcher in the MWL only to Jairo Solis of Quad Cities. In Patiño's 2nd start of the season on May 22, he allowed 7 ER in 3.1 IP on the road at West Michigan. Since his 3rd start on May 28, the native of Columbia has posted a 0.94 ERA, which is the lowest among any qualifying pitcher in all of full-season professional baseball (Low-A, High-A, AA, AAA, & MLB) in that span. During that time, Luis has thrown 48 innings, allowed 28 hits, 13 walks, 5 earned runs, while striking out 60 batters. Patiño has thrown 5 or more no-hit innings in in 3 out of his 12 starts this season. Last time out on Wednesday in Dayton, Luis threw 5 no-hit innings, walking 1 batter while striking out 7.

ROAD WOES: The TinCaps are 19-33 (.365) on the road this season compared to 29-24 (.547) at Parkview Field. On the road, the team is batting .221 with 3.7 runs/game. At home, the team is batting .262 averagins 4.6 runs/game. With yesterday's shutout, the TinCaps have gone 23 consecutive innings without a going back to Saturday's game in which the TinCaps scored all 3 of their runs in the top of the 4th inning.

HEATING UP: Gabriel Arias is on a season-best 9-game on-base streak. During this time, since July 19, the 18-year-old from Venezuela is 10-for-31 (.323) with a double, a home run, 4 RBIs, 5 walks, and 4 runs scored.

PODO POWER: Since making his 2018 TinCaps debut on May 18, Robbie Podorsky leads the Midwest League as well as Class Low-A in batting average at .363. Thursday he had a 16-game on-base streak that began on July 2 come to a close. In the stretch, he hit .410 with a .500 OBP - both league highs.

IN CONTROL: TinCaps pitchers have walked the fewest batters in the Midwest League this season - 302 in 910.0 IP. That's only 3.0 BB/9. Fort Wayne also has the best ratio of strikeouts to walks (3.06/1).

BASEBALL RUNS IN THE FAMILY: TinCaps Hitting Coach Jonathan Mathews' son, Merrick, won the Class 2A Iowa Baseball State Finals, 4-3, with Centerville High School on Saturday. Jonathan attended Centerville High School, as did his father, Rick. Rick Mathews is currently a scout for the Colorado Rockies. Rick served as the bullpen coach for the Rockies for 6 years under Clint Hurdle, including in 2007 when the Rockies made it to the World Series against the Boston Red Sox. Jonathan also coached at the big league level in 2017 when he was the Padres Outfield Coach. Centerville is a town in Iowa of only about 5,300 people located about 20 minutes north of the Iowa-Missouri border.

ON THE SHELF: The TinCaps currently have 3 key players on the Disabled List in starting pitcher Mason Thompson (tricep strain), infielder Justin Lopez (broken left thumb), and outfielder Tirso Ornelas (right wrist).

BULLPEN BOOMERANG: TinCaps relievers have posted a 3.01 ERA over the last 86 games since April 25. In this time, the 'pen has been led by Travis Radke, Caleb Boushley, Evan Miller, and Ben Sheckler. Through the first 19 games of the year, the bullpen had allowed 60 ER in 72.1 IP for a 7.47 ERA.
