Bees Manage Just Three Baserunners in Shutout Loss to Beloit

Burlington Bees News Release

Burlington, IA. - It was a fast and not enjoyable game for the Burlington Bees (9-23,39-62) as they were shutout in their series opener against the Beloit Snappers (21-12,53-49) 1-0. Wyatt Marks (5-6) shutdown Burlington's offense in his seven innings, allowing just two hits and striking out ten, making this the second time he hit double digit strikeouts in a game. Jose Soriano (0-5) suffered another loss despite a solid outing, where he went five innings, allowing one run on two hits, one walk, and two strikeouts.

Snappers score lone run in third

Jack Meggs led the third inning off with a single and got to second after stealing second for his third stolen base of the season. Ryan Gridley brought him in on an RBI to right, giving the Snappers a 1-0 lead.

Bees blow scoring chance in seventh

Burlington had just one hit going into the bottom of the seventh, but Torii Hunter changed that by leading off the inning with his 13th double of the season. Orlando Martinez then flew out to right and Hunter managed to tag up and advance to third with just one out. Kevin Williams Jr and Spencer Griffin couldn't get Hunter in though, as they both struck out swinging.

The seventh was the only real scoring opportunity the Bees had all game, their only other baserunners came on a two out single from Zane Gurwitz in the third, and a two out walk from Connor Fitzsimons.

Positive things

One thing that went well for the Bees last night was the pitching. Along with the great start from Soriano, the Bees got great innings from their relief pitchers, Anfernee Benitez and Eduardo Del Rosario. Both pitchers threw two innings, allowed no hits or walks, and each struck out four.

Looking Ahead

The Bees will need to forget about this lack luster performance and get ready for tomorrow's 2pm game against the Snappers. The Bees are expected to start Denny Brady, who is 0-3 with a 6.60 ERA in six starts. Brady has allowed just four walks in 15.0 innings and has thrown 18 strikeouts, but he has left a lot of pitches over the heart of the plate in games, which has allowed hitters to have an average of .344 against him. Brady did have a solid outing in his last start against Lake County, where he went four innings and allowed just one earned run. Beloit is expected to start Jean Ruiz, who is 4-7 with a 4.41 ERA in 13 starts, and 19 total appearances. Ruiz will look to continue the success he has been having as of late, allowing just three earned runs in his past five starts.
