Liput Launches Loons Past Captains

July 31, 2018 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Lake County Captains News Release

(Eastlake, OH) - Deacon Liput's two homers were all the Great Lakes Loons (14-24, 38-68) on Tuesday to beat the Lake County Captains (17-20, 46-61) in the final game of a four-game series at Classic Park. Liput went deep in the first inning and again with a go-ahead homer in the seventh to sink the Captains, 3-2.

Liput put the Loons in front just two batters into the game. Josh McLain floated a leadoff single to right off the end of his bat and Liput followed with a fly ball that kept on carrying to left. Oscar Gonzalez drifted to the wall and watched the ball land in the first row of the bleachers to give the Loons a 2-0 edge.

Captains starter Kirk McCarty quickly rebounded from the sour start. The southpaw did not give up another run and ended up striking out nine men over five innings. McCarty surrendered five hits and walked two to keep the Captains in the ballgame.

With McCarty holding serve, the Captains came back to tie the score. Will Benson put Lake County on the board with a solo homer in the second. One pitch after pulling a long foul ball to right, Benson straightened out an 0-1 pitch from Loons starter Gerardo Carrillo and deposited it over the right field wall for his 16th homer of the year to tie for the Midwest League lead. The long ball pulled the Captains within one run.

Nolan Jones came through with the game-tying RBI in the third. Miguel Eladio led off the inning with a single and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Jones grounded a single past first baseman Brock Carpenter with two outs to score Eladio and even the score at 2-2.

Carrillo also pitched five strong innings to keep the game tied. The 19-year old right-hander allowed two runs on four hits. Carrillo struck out four and walked one.

The game remained tied until the seventh when Liput struck again. With one out and nobody aboard, Liput launched a fly ball to the right of dead centerfield against Captains right-hander Riley Echols. The drive cleared the wall between the batter's eye and the videoboard to give the Loons a 3-2 lead. Liput had entered the game with two total home runs in his 14-game pro career.

Loons reliever Jasiel Alvino closed the door in the last two innings. Lake County threatened in the eighth when Gonzalez singled and advanced to second on a ground out, but Jose Vicente's two-out liner to left-center found the glove of left fielder Drew Avans to end the inning. Alvino then worked around a two-out walk to Jose Medina in the ninth by striking out Elvis Perez to end the game and secure his fourth save.

Austin Drury earned the win in his Midwest League debut. The lefty reliever pitched two scoreless innings in the sixth and seventh. Drury (1-0) struck out two, walked one and allowed one hit.

Echols (1-4) took the loss after allowing the go-ahead homer. Liput's long ball represented the only run and hit against Echols across three innings out of the bullpen. The Captains' reliever struck out three and walked one.

Lake County lost three out of four to Great Lakes and was held to five runs in the series. The Captains welcome the Bowling Green Hot Rods to town on Wednesday for the start of a three-game series. Wednesday's series opener is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at Classic Park.
