Late Scoring Helps Bees Take Down Snappers 5-3

Burlington, IA. - The Burlington Bees (10-23,40-62) had a big bounce back performance in their 5-3 Sunday victory over the Beloit Snappers (21-13,53-50). James Ziemba (2-2) earned his second victory despite running into some problems. Ziemba went two innings, allowed two runs and three hits, allowing no walks. Jean Ruiz (4-8) fell to four games under .500 on his record after allowing three runs on five hits in his five and two thirds innings, while throwing a walk and two strikeouts.

Bees finally score in the fifth

Much like yesterday's game, the Bees had very little offensive momentum early on in the game. However, Julio Garcia finally got things going their way after leading the fifth off with a broken bat double for his 15th of the season. Connor Fitzsimons would advance Garcia to third on a ground out to second, but Alvaro Rubalcaba would strikeout in the next at bat for the second out of the inning. The Bees needed Zane Gurwitz to deliver a hit to drive in a run, or so they thought, because Garcia ended up scoring on a wild pitch, giving the Bees a 1-0 lead.

Farrar takes lead away in the sixth

Ziemba took over in the sixth inning after a quality start from Denny Brady, but quickly gave up the Bees one run lead. Hunter Hargrove led the inning off with a single, and Logan Farrar blasted his 11th homerun off the scoreboard to give the Snappers a 2-1 lead.

Bees go back ahead in next half inning

The Snappers weren't able to enjoy their lead very long either thanks to Kevin Williams Jr, who crushed a solo homerun to left for his third of the season, tying the game at 2-2. Spencer Griffin followed him up with a two out single and advanced to second after stealing second for his fifth steal of the year. Keinner Pina drove in the go ahead run on an opposite field single to right, putting the Bees back up 3-2.

Two Errors allow Bees to score in the seventh

Beloit got the first two batters of the seventh out with no difficulties and were on their way to a one-two-three inning when Torii Hunter hit a grounder to third. However, the throw from Jesus Lage was off and Hunter reached on an error. Heath Bowers then tried picking off Hunter at first, but the throw was way wide, and Hunter managed to advance to second. That set up Orlando Martinez with his third double of the year, scoring Hunter for another Bees run, making the score 4-2.

Both clubs add one in the eighth

Hargrove delivered another lead off hit to start the eighth inning, but this hit was his 23rd double to give the Snappers a runner in scoring position. Jack Meggs drove in Hargrove on a double of his own, getting the Snappers back within a run.

Griffin gave the Bees a leadoff hit in the eighth as well and stole his second base of the game to get to second. Garcia advanced Griffin to third on a groundout to first, but the Bees once again faced two outs. However, a passed ball by Skyler Weber allowed Griffin to score, putting the Bees back up by two runs at 5-3. Austin Warren would pitch a three up, three down inning in the ninth to earn his first save and give the Bees a 5-3 victory.

Great day from Brady

Denny Brady proved he belongs in the rotation with another great start in today's game. Although Brady didn't earn the win, he still went five innings, allowed four hits, just one walk, and tied his season high with six strikeouts. Although Brady hasn't earned a win this season, he has allowed just three runs in his past 12 innings and has only thrown one walk.

Not finishing innings cost Beloit

The Snappers had problems getting out of jams, as they allowed all five runs with two outs. The Bees final two runs weren't earned, because of the error by Lage and the past ball by Weber. Beloit did have another solid day on offense, scoring three runs on nine hits, but the defensive struggles allowed the Bees to steal a win from them.

Looking Ahead

The Bees and Snappers will continue their series again tomorrow night at 6:30 pm. The Bees are expected to start Max Herrmann, who is 1-5 with a 5.48 ERA. Herrmann has started nine games for the Bees and has appeared in a total of 22 games but has struggled at times. He has allowed 87 hits in 64 total innings and has allowed opposing hitters to hit .326 against him. The Snappers are expected to start Ivan Andueza, who is just 1-7 with a 5.26 ERA in 13 starts.
