Whitecaps Blank Cubs 3-0 for Second Straight Day
July 31, 2018 - Midwest League (MWL1)
South Bend Cubs News Release
Comstock Park, MI: The South Bend Cubs scoreless streak has now reached 19 straight innings without a run. After another tough game on Monday night from Fifth Third Ballpark in Comstock Park, South Bend dropped their fifth game in a row, losing tonight 3-0.
Making his return from the disabled list was Cubs starter Ryan Lawlor. Lawlor, who in his previous start at home vs Wisconsin matched a franchise record for strikeouts in a game at 11, did not receive the run support he needed on Monday and finished four innings with three runs allowed and five strikeouts. He takes the loss and drops his record to 1-2 on the season.
The game winning hit for the Whitecaps came in the bottom of the 2nd inning thanks to back-to-back doubles by Joey Morgan and Colby Bortles. Morgan scored on Bortles' RBI double to make the score 1-0. West Michigan added a pair of runs in the bottom of the 4th inning to take the commanding 3-0 lead.
Out of the bullpen for South Bend, Brendan King and Yapson Gomez kept it close and gave the Cubs an opportunity to come back. Between the two hurlers, they worked four innings of scoreless baseball with a combined four strikeouts. Overall, Cubs pitching struck out nine batters on Monday.
At the plate, South Bend hit the ball hard at times, but on many occasions it was straight to West Michigan defenders on line drives. The Cubs left four men on base in game three against the Whitecaps. Chris Singleton was the only Cub with two hits. He finished 2/3 and raises his batting average to .194.
Now that West Michigan has won the series, South Bend will look to avoid the sweep tomorrow night in the series finale. The Cubs will send right hander and Chicago Cubs top-30 prospect Erling Moreno to the mound on Tuesday night. First pitch from Fifth Third Ballpark is set for 7:05 p.m.
