Tigers Claw Back for 2-1 Win over Brooklyn

BROOKLYN, NY - June 25, 2015 - The Cyclones and Tigers locked up in a pitcher's duel on Thursday evening at MCU Park, with Brooklyn coming up just short, falling by the score of 2-1. Tyler Badamo (0-1) was the hard-luck loser, allowing just two runs over 6.2 innings, while walking one and striking out five.

While Badamo looked sharp on the mound for the 'Clones, Connecticut starter Spenser Watkins (1-1) was equally impressive. The pair of hurlers matched zeroes through the first two frames before Brooklyn broke through in the bottom of the third. Branden Kaupe led off the inning with a line drive to centerfield that was misplayed by Jose Azocar, and led to a triple for the Wailuku, Hawaii native. Will Fulmer was the next man up and took advantage of the scoring opportunity with a sacrifice fly to centerfield that gave Brooklyn the early 1-0 lead.

The Cyclones' advantage, however, was short-lived. In the top of the fourth inning, the Tigers would pull back even in an unconventional way. Jose Zambrano and Brett Pirtle started the threat with back-to-back singles before Will Allen popped out for the first out of the frame. Corey Baptist then grounded into what looked like an inning-ending double play, but after the force out at second, the relay to first was just a tad bit late in the eyes of base umpire Fred DeJesus. Zambrano never stopped running on the play, and after the bang-bang call at first base, was able to slide in safely before the relay throw from Brooklyn firstbaseman Zach Mathieu.

After a scoreless fifth inning, the Tigers scored the go-ahead run in the top of the sixth. Brett Pirtle, who finished the night 3-for-4, started the inning with a double and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Will Allen would then push across what would prove to be the game-winning run on a sacrifice fly that gave Connecticut the 2-1 advantage, which is how the game would end.

Brooklyn tried to mount a rally in the seventh inning when Enamanuel Zabala worked a one-out walk and Jose Garcia followed with a single to put a pair of Cyclones aboard for pinch-hitter David Thompson, who was making his professional debut. Thompson, the Mets 4th round pick from the University of Miami, swung at the first pitch he saw and grounded into an inning ending 5-5-3 double play.

The Cyclones will look to return to their winning ways on Friday evening, as they take on these very same Tigers in the middle game of a three-game series. RHP Gaby Almonte (0-1) will toe the rubber for Brooklyn. Friday will also mark the start of Fireworks Week at MCU Park, as each of the next four home games feature post-game fireworks.
