Vermont Lake Monsters News Release

FISHKILL, NY --- Gabriel Santana went 2-for-4 with a solo homer in the third inning and a go ahead RBI ground-rule double as the Vermont Lake Monsters rallied to score three runs in the top of the eighth inning to defeat the Hudson Valley Renegades 4-3 in New York-Penn League action Thursday night at Dutchess Stadium.

Vermont trailed 3-1 when they leadoff the eighth inning with three straight singles off Renegades reliever Luis Urena (0-1) to cut the deficit to one run. Chris Iriart led off the inning with an infield single to short and moved to second on a Lana Akau single to second. After a balk by Urena advanced the runners to second and third, Jesus Lopez lined an RBI single to leftfield scoring Iriart and Trace Loehr followed with a game-tying sacrifice fly to rightfield.

Lopez then stole second base, the Lake Monsters first steal of the season, and scored the eventual winning run when Santana grounded an RBI double over the third-base bag. Jonnie Massad (1-0), who entered the game in the fifth inning, did not allow a run over the final five innings of game to earn the win. After Vermont took the lead in the eighth, Massad worked around a leadoff single in the bottom of the inning and a two-out double in the ninth inning to clinch the Lake Monsters second win of the season.

A pair of 2015 MLB draft picks, Kyle Friedrichs (7th-round out of Long Beach State) and Jared Lyons (9th-round out of Liberty), made their professional debuts on the mound for Vermont as Friedrichs allowed a solo homer to Manny Sanchez in the first inning and Lyons a pair of runs in the second innning as Hudson Valley took a 3-0 lead after two innings.

Santana got the Lake Monsters on the scoreboard in the third inning with a leadoff homer off Renegades starter Yonny Chirinos, who allowed just the one run on three hits with two walks and six strikeouts over the first five innings. Reliever Tomas Michaelson came on to toss two scoreless innings before Urena was touched for the three runs in the eighth to take the loss.

Evan Manarino tossed two scoreless innings of relief and Iriart had a pair of infield singles for Vermont (2-5), which won their road opener for the fourth time in the last six years. The Lake Monsters continue the three-game series with Hudson Valley with games on Friday and Saturday nights before Vermont returns home to begin a three-game series with Lowell at Centennial Field on Sunday.
