Doubledays Wrap Red-Hot Road Trip with 5-1 Victory

STATE COLLEGE, PA - Auburn beat State College 8-3 on Wednesday night to take the series two games to one. The win also capped off the Doubledays season opening six-game road trip in which Auburn went 5-1.
It all started with the top third of the order in the first inning. Dalton Dulin was hit by a pitch and then Jakson Reetz moved him over to third with a double down the third base line. Leftfielder Matthew Page then stepped up to the left side of the plate and drove in both Dulin and Reetz with a single into centerfield. Unfortunately, Page would later be stranded on third to end the inning.
After a scoreless second, Auburn accomplished quite the feat in the third. In just six batters, the Doubledays hit for the cycle in the third inning alone. Diomedes Eusebio lead off with a solo home run to left, his first of the season. After Kelvin Gutierrez reached on an error, Randy Encarnacion doubled to left. Jorge Tillero brough them both home with a single into centerfield. Clay Williamson then struck out before Edwin Lora drove in Tillero with his second triple of the season to complete the third inning cycle. Lora's triple gave Auburn a 6-0 lead.
State College responded in the bottom of the inning with back-to-back-to-back singles to score their first run of the day. When the Doubledays responded with another run in the fourth, the Spikes answered again with a run in the fifth thanks in part to a Craig Aikin double.
Both teams scored in the sixth to put the score at 8-3, which ended up being the final score.
Auburn once again got great performances out of their three pitchers. McKenzie Mills made his first start and gave up one run on four hits over four innings. In relief, Jose Morales gave up two runs on three hits before Cole Plouck came in for the three inning save. Plouck's final line was three innings pitched, zero hits, zero runs, one walk, and two strikeouts.
The Doubledays return home Thursday night to face the West Virginia Black Bears at 7:05 PM for Auburn's Home Opener.Â
