Tri-City ValleyCats News Release

BROOKLYN, NY - The Tri-City ValleyCats dropped a 2-1 nail biter on Wednesday night, falling to the Brooklyn Cyclones on a walk-off RBI triple in the bottom of the 12th inning at MCU Park on Coney Island.

While the first twos game between the 'Cats and Cyclones were lopsided affairs (a 14-0 Brooklyn win on Monday, and an 11-4 Tri City victory on Tuesday), Wednesday's series finale was a neck-and-neck pitchers' duel from start to finish. Getting the start for the ValleyCats was right-hander Rogelio Armenteros, who struck out seven Brooklyn hitters, while allowing only three hits and no walks over five innings.

He left the game following the fifth frame with a 1-0 lead, after 'Cats centerfielder Johnny Sewald walked in the third inning, moved to second base on a single by shortstop Kolbey Carpenter, then stole third base and scored on a throwing error by Brooklyn's catcher.

Unfortunately, the Cyclones tied up the game in the bottom of the sixth inning, when Vincent Siena drove home Tucker Tharp with a two-out, two-strike RBI single to right field off of Tri-City reliever Elieser Hernandez.

The run, which was unearned due to a 'Cats defensive miscue earlier in the inning, was the only run allowed by Hernandez, who went on to surrender only three hits, while striking out six batters in four innings.

But while the Tri-City hurlers were holding down the Brooklyn offense, the Cyclones pitchers were having just as much success, holding the 'Cats scoreless from the 6th inning on.

The ValleyCats were able to threaten multiple times during the extra stanzas, as they loaded the bases in both the 10th and 12th innings, but they came up empty both times.

However, Cyclones designated hitter Michael Katz reached on a fielder's choice with one out in the bottom of 12th inning, then scored on a game-winning, walk-off triple to deep right field by first baseman Michael Katz.

With the loss, the 'Cats conclude their season-opening six-game road trip with an even record of three wins and three losses. They will now take on the Staten Island Yankees in the home opener on Thursday night at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium. First pitch will be at 7:00pm, with RHP David Paulino (1-0, 0.00) on the mound for Tri-City. Staten Island has yet to announce their starting pitcher.
