Tri-City ValleyCats News Release
TROY, NY - The Tri-City ValleyCats started their 2015 home campaign in style, holding the Staten Island Yankees to one hit, cruising to a 6-0 victory in front of 5,396 fans on Opening Night at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium.
In their first game playing at "The Joe" following a six-game season-opening road trip, the 'Cats put together a dominant performance both at the plate, and on the mound.
Offensively, the scoring started for Tri-City in the second inning, when Keach Ballard drove home Kolbey Carpenter and Cesar Carrasco with a two-out, two-RBI single. Ballard then scored one batter later on an RBI single by Johnny Sewald.
Sewald went on to drive in two more runs with RBI's in the fourth and sixth innings, going 3-4 with a stolen base and the three runs batted in. The other 'Cats with multi-hit games included Ballard (2-4, 2RBI's), Carpenter (2-4, R) and Dexter McCall (2-4, 2B, 2R).
Right-handed pitcher David Paulino got the start for the 'Cats, and struck out six Yankee batters, while walking only two in 4.1 hitless innings. After a couple of defensive miscues, Zach Davis entered the game with one out, and runners on first and third base in the top of the fifth inning. However, the left-handed reliever got Staten Island first baseman Ryan Krill to ground into a double play to end the threat.
Trent Thornton then came in to pitch in the top of the sixth inning, and struck out four batters in three innings, with his only blemish coming with one out in the seventh inning, when designated hitter Griffin Gordon hit a ground ball down the right field line for a single. It was the only hit allowed by Tri-City the entire night.
Juan Santos pitched the ninth for Tri-City, striking out two batters in a scoreless, hitless inning.
The 'Cats will return to "The Joe" on Friday night, taking on the Yankees in the second game of this three-game set. First pitch will be at 7:00 p.m., with RHP Dean Deetz (0-1, 0.00) on the mound for Tri-City, and RHP Matt Borens (0-0, 3.00) getting the start for Staten Island.
