Scrappers Fall in Home Opener

June 25, 2015 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
Mahoning Valley Scrappers News Release

The Mahoning Valley Scrappers (3-4) dropped their home opener to the State College Spikes (2-5), 6-0 on Thursday night at Eastwood Field.

The Scrappers offense continues to struggle. It had four hits tonight, which makes four hits in the last 18 innings after the perfect game in Batavia on Wednesday night.

The scoring started early for the Spikes. In the top of the second, Casey Grayson hit a double and then a single for Thomas Spitz made it 1-0 Spikes.

Michael Pritchard scored for State College in the top of the third. He earlier reached on an error by shortstop Willi Castro. State College added another run in the top of the sixth when Leobaldo Pina took Matt Esparza's first professional pitch out of the yard for his first home run of the year.

The Scrapper bats could not do much from there. They made a little noise in the bottom of the ninth. Anthony Santander hit a double down the left field line, but Tyler Bray shut the door for the Spikes.

Mahoning Valley and State College play the second game of a three-game series on Friday night at 7:05. Leandro Linares gets the ball for Mahoning Valley and Dailyn Martinez takes the hill for State College.
