Connecticut Tigers Win First Road Game of Year
June 25, 2015 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
Norwich Sea Unicorns News Release
NORWICH, CT-The Connecticut Tigers (2-5) won their first road game of the year over the Brooklyn Cyclones (4-3) by a final score of 2-1.
The teams remained scoreless until Brooklyn broke the ice in the bottom of the third. Shortstop Brandon Kaupe ripped a triple to straight away center field to start the inning. A few pitches later third basemen Will Fulmer lifted a sac fly to center that gave the Cyclones a 1-0 lead.
Connecticut didn't wait long to tie the score. In the top of the fourth, third basemen Jose Zambrano and second basemen Brett Pirtle singled with no outs to put runners on first and second. Still there with one-out things got a bit wacky. First basemen Corey Baptist grounded to third on what appeared to be an inning ending double play. Instead the throw to first was late and Zambrano was able to race around from second to score and tie the game at 1-1.
A couple innings later Connecticut took there first lead since Sunday. Brett Pirtle (3-4) doubled to right center and moved to third on a wild pitch. He wasn't there long as designated hitter Will Allen lifted a sac fly to give the Tigers a 2-1 lead.
Brooklyn threatened to tie the game in the bottom of the eighth as they put two runners on with just one-out. The threat was quickly erased when relief pitcher Nate Fury induced an inning ending double play to retire the side and preserve the lead. Jack Fischer came on in the ninth to pick up his first save of year.
Both teams got strong starts from their starting pitchers. For the Tigers Spenser Watkins (1-0) making his second start of the season cruised through his 5.1 innings allowing just three hits while striking out four and walking two. On the other side Tyler Badamo (0-1) worked 6.2 innings scattering seven hits while allowing two runs with five strikeouts and just a single walk.
The Connecticut Tigers are the New York-Penn League affiliate of the Detroit Tigers and play a 76 game schedule that runs from mid June through early September. 2015 season tickets, group tickets, mini plans, individual game tickets, and team merchandise are now on sale! The front office and ticket office is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and can be accessed in person or by calling 860-887-7962.
