Lowell Spinners News Release

LOWELL, MASS. - The Lowell Spinners finally got their season officially started at LeLacheur Park and they did not disappoint their home fans, earning a 6-5 win over the Aberdeen IronBirds Thursday night in front of a sell-out crowd of 5,067 fans at LeLacheur Park. Josh Ockimey was the star of a balanced Spinners attack, driving in a pair with an RBI double and making a "Web Gem" caliber play at first base to escape an inning.

After the pomp and circumstance of Opening Day was complete, Aberdeen (2-5) threatened immediately, loading the bases in the top of the first inning. Danny Rosenbaum however worked his way out of trouble, striking out Mike Odenwelder to end the inning.

Lowell (6-1) jumped out to an early lead in the bottom half of the inning. After back-to-back singles to lead off the inning, a force left men on the corners before Tucker Tubbs doubled down the first base line, skipping off the bag, to give the Spinners a 2-0 lead.

The Ironbirds took a lead in the third. Drew Turbin doubled to lead off the inning and took third on a wild pitch, he came around to score on a double by Randy Gassaway. A fielder's choice brought home a second run and a bout of wildness for Rosenbaum advanced a runner to third and an Oswill Lartiguez single brought him home to give the visitors a 3-2 lead.

The Spinners response was swift, as they scored four runs to take a 6-3 lead, all with two outs. Tate Matheny started the rally with a single up the middle and advanced to second on a walk by Tucker Tubbs. Ockimey followed with a two-run double, followed by two additional doubles by Mitch Gunsolus and Victor Acosta to extend the lead to three.

Aberdeen chipped away at the lead with single runs in the fifth and seventh innings, but Daniel Gonzalez left the tying run on base, striking out Odenwaelder to end the game.

Three Spinners had multi-hit nights, led by the top of the line-up duo of Bryan Hudson and Jeremy Rivera, while Acosta also had a two-hit performance. Tubbs and Ockimey each had two RBI in the win.

Rosenbaum made his second rehab appearance with the Spinners, allowing three runs on four hits and four walks, striking out three over four innings. Gonzalez (2-0, 1.80) piggy-backed out of the bullpen, earning his second win with five innings of relief allowing two runs on four hits and a walk, striking out four.

The Spinners look to keep their momentum when they meet again Friday night at LeLacheur Park as the Spinners celebrate the 1975 Red Sox with a visit from Bernie Carbo. Jake Cosart (0-0, 0.00) gets the ball for a 7:05 first pitch.
