Durham Bulls News Release

DURHAM, NC - The Durham Bulls' comeback attempt fell short Thursday night at the DBAP, as they fell to the Norfolk Tides 8-7 after an early five-run deficit.

Trailing 7-2 entering the bottom of the sixth, Durham got two runs back on a two-run single by JP Arencibia. After the Tides (68-50) made it an 8-4 game on a solo homer by Dariel Alvarez in the top of the seventh, the Bulls came back with three runs in the bottom of the frame. First, Nick Franklin drew a bases-loaded walk, before Mikie Mahtook followed two batters later with a two-run single to cut the deficit to 8-7. Durham was not able to get anything across over the final two frames however, dropping its third game in its last four tries.

The Bulls (57-62) opened the game's scoring in the bottom of the first, as leadoff batter Joey Rickard was hit by a pitch, and scored two batters later when Franklin drilled a double to rightfield.

Norfolk stormed back in the top of the second though, scoring six runs and sending 10 men to the plate. A one-out error got things started for the Tides, and three batters later Sharlon Schoop tied the game with a bases-loaded single. Paul Janish followed with a two-run single to rightfield for a 3-1 lead, before Julio Borbon's sacrifice fly to center made it a 4-1 game. Rey Navarro then doubled to deep right to score Janish, before Christian Walker doubled home Navarro for a 6-1 Tides' advantage.

Durham would get one run back in the bottom of the second, when Corey Brown launched a solo homer into the rightfield stands to make it a four-run game. The visitors extended the lead back to five in the sixth stanza however, when Navarro knocked a two-out double to score Schoop.

Jorge Rondon (3-1) earned the win, allowing two runs in two innings of relief, while Oliver Drake earned his 20th save of the season with a scoreless ninth inning. Righty Matt Andriese (3-3) suffered the loss, allowing six runs (two earned) over five innings while striking out five.

Durham embarks on a six-game, five-day road trip beginning with a doubleheader Friday in Indianapolis. LHP Blake Snell (2-2, 1.42) will go in Game One for the Bulls, followed by LHP Everett Teaford (4-7, 5.94) in Game Two. The Indians will counter with RHP Radhames Liz (4-4, 1.12) in the first contest, while they have yet to name a starter for the second game. Both games are scheduled as seven-inning contests, with Game One slated to begin at 6:05 p.m.
