SWB Game Notes

August 13, 2015 - International League (IL1)
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release

ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The RailRiders earned their fourth walk-off win of the season, outlasting the Pawtucket Red Sox in 12 innings on Thursday night, 4-3.The PawSox have lost 10 straight. SWB stands 15 games above .500 for the first time since the then-SWB Yankees won the division in 2013 at 84-60.

WITH CONVICTION: Aaron Judge won the game with a 12th-inning single that scored Rico Noel from third base. Judge finished the game 3-for-5 with that RBI, a walk and a strikeout. He leads the Yankees' farm in overall home runs while the next three spots are all occupied by his teammates: 2. Gary Sanchez (16); 3. Kyle Roller (13); 4. Greg Bird (12). Judge also paces the farm system with 63 RBIs. Nine of his last 15 hits have gone for extra bases including four home runs.

ALL YOUR BASE ARE BELONG TO US: Noel pinch ran for Bird in the 12th. He stole both second and third before Judge's one-out blooper sent him home. Before last night the RailRiders had a man steal multiple bags in a game just once all season. Rob Refsnyder took two on the Louisville Bats on June 24. Like Noel, each swipe came in the same journey around the bases. He stole second and third in the sixth inning on the battery of Sam LeCure and Chris Berset.

NOT-SO-GENTLE BEN: Ben Gamel homered to tie the game in the seventh, part of a 2-for-4 night with two walks and a pair of runs scored. His efforts stretched the IL's longest active hitting streak to 11 games (19-for-45, .422/.469/.800/1.269). He leads the IL with 12 outfield assists and co-paces all of MiLB with 14 triples, two shy of the single-season franchise record set by Shane Victorino in his 2005 IL MVP season. Gamel has posted multiple hits in 11 of his last 18 games, hitting .408/.469/.775/1.244 in that time. He has lifted his overall contact clip to .302, good for fourth in the IL. He ranks among the IL's best in hits (4th, 125), runs scored (T-3rd, 66), slugging (3rd, .481), extra-base hits (4th, 42) and total bases (3rd, 199). Gamel entered 2015 with 10 home runs in 415 games and 1,634 at-bats as a pro. In his first Triple-A season, he has bashed nine homers in 107 games played and 414 at-bats.

BULLISH 'PEN: The triumvirate of Nick Rumbelow, Caleb Cotham and Johnny Barbato (2-0) combined to retire 18 of 20 to end the game. The only two baserunners came on an Humberto Quintero infield single and a full-count walk to Mike Miller. Rumbelow has struck out 54 men while walking 13 in 49 innings. Cotham has allowed just three earned runs in 16 outings and 26.1 innings (1.03 ERA). He has held the IL to a .198 average while posting 27 strikeouts against two walks. Barbato has allowed just one run in his 12.2 innings (0.71 ERA). He has been perfect in three save tries.

ONE-SIDED RELATIONSHIP: The RailRiders have more wins against Pawtucket (12-3) than any other team this season, including a 5-0 mark in the Ocean State. They have taken seven straight and 18 of 21 going back to last season.

NAILBITERS: Half of the RailRiders' last 22 games have been decided by one run and 15 have come down to two runs or less. SWB has gone 16-6 over its last 22 and owns the IL's best record in single-score games at 23-14 (.622).

FEATHERED FIGHT: Greg Bird went 2-for-6 with a pair of singles. The IL Batter of the Week (Aug. 3-9) has hits in 12 of 13, slashing .370/.379/.630/1.009 in that time to lift his Triple-A batting average to .301.

SENOR SWING: Gary Sanchez walked and drove in a run. After starting his Triple-A time 2-for-11 (.182/.286/.455/.740), he has gone 25-for-71 (.352/.420/.563/.983). He has hit .329 at Triple-A with 21 RBIs in 23 games.

UNDER MY PIRELA: Jose Pirela singled and walked. Since the All-Star break, he has hit .383/.455/.489/.944 while lifting his batting average to .341. If he had enough plate appearances to qualify (min. 2.7/team game), he would trail only Buffalo's Matt Hague (.345) in the batting title chase.
