Pawtucket Red Sox News Release
(Moosic, PA) Jose Pirela's eighth-inning single spoiled a strong start from Shawn Haviland and lifted the Scranton RailRiders to a 3-2 win over the Pawtucket Red Sox on Thursday night at PNC Field. With the victory, the 'Riders sent the Sox to an eleventh straight loss and a twelfth series sweep. Scranton won a game in its final at-bat for the third time in the series.
Haviland became the first PawSox starter to pitch into the eighth inning since June 26th; he retired Kyle Roller for the first out of the inning before he surrendered consecutive hits - just the fifth and sixth against him. Noe Ramirez came on in relief and yielded the decisive hit to Pirela. Over 7.1 innings, Haviland struck out three and walked two.
The RailRiders surged to a lead in the first inning on Aaron Judge's two-run, two-out single. Ben Gamel and Rob Refsnyder had singled to open the game and scored on Judge's base hit.
Pawtucket - which had two men aboard with one out in the first but failed to score - would tie the game in the third. 'Riders starter Joel De La Cruz walked Matt Spring to open the inning then allowed a Deven Marrero single. Quintin Berry sacrificed both runners over, then Rivero plated Spring with a groundout to third. Sandy Leon then knotted the game with a single to right field.
Eric Wooten took the mound in the fourth for Scranton, would not leave it until there were two outs in the ninth, and dominated in between. Haviland, meanwhile, only allowed one hit between the second and seventh innings.
That lone hit came in the fourth when Gary Sanchez doubled to open the frame, but Haviland retired the next three to keep the game knotted.
Wooten allowed single hits in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings but nothing further. The lefthander walked Spring to open the inning before Marrero bunted pinch runner Mike Miller to second. After Berry grounded out to short, Wooten was lifted for James Pazos, who struck out Carlos Rivero to end the ballgame.
The PawSox head to Lehigh Valley for the first of a four-game series on Friday night at 7:05 P.M. Righthander Zeke Spruill (4-9, 4.48) goes for Pawtucket and will be opposed by IronPigs righty Alec Asher (1-0, 2.77). Radio coverage will begin on WHJJ and online at 6:50.
The PawSox return to McCoy on Monday, August 17th for the first of a nine-game homestand at 7:05. Good seats for all the games on the homestand are available; call 401-724-7300 or visit the PawSox online at www.pawsox.com to get them now.
