Rochester Red Wings News Release

BUFFALO, NY - The Red Wings and Buffalo Bisons split a Thursday afternoon doubleheader at Coca-Cola Field. Pat Dean and Michael Tonkin combined for a shutout in a 3-0 first game win, with Xavier Avery driving in all three runs. In the second game, Chris Heisey homered in the bottom of the seventh to give the Bisons a 2-1 win.

The Wings remain a game behind the second place Bisons with the split, and trail first place Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders by 6 1/2 games with the RailRiders scheduled to play Thursday night. The Wings and RailRiders open a three-game series at Frontier Field Friday on Red Wings Hall of Fame Night, with fireworks after the game.

Game One:

Pat Dean and Jeff Francis matched up in a left-handers' duel. The Wings picked up a pair of first inning singles off Francis, and with two outs Francis hit Oswaldo Arcia in the leg with a pitch to load the bases. Arcia was slow to get up, slowly walked to first base, then motioned to the dugout that he needed to come out of the game. He was replaced by Xavier Avery.

The Wings took the lead in the third inning, when Byron Buxton reached on an error to open the frame. Buxton moved to second on a ground out by James Beresford, and scored on Avery's single.

Through four innings, Dean had allowed three hits and struck out a pair. Dean was helped out by a diving catch by Eric Farris in left field, who took away a hit from Alex Hassan in the fourth inning.

In the top of the fifth, Avery launched a two-out, two-run homer off Francis to give the Wings a 3-0 lead. Avery, who joined the Wings July 26, has now hit four homers with the Wings in 16 games.

Third baseman Jose Martinez speared a line drive off the bat of Ty Kelly for the first out of the bottom of the fifth, the eighth straight batter set down by Dean. Andy Burns followed with a single, but Dean got out of the inning after a fly out, walk, and pop out.

Francis (5-1) pitched six innings, allowing eight hits and three runs (two earned) with a walk and four strikeouts. Francis threw 99 pitches, 58 for strikes.

Dean (9-10) made a strong bid for his third shutout of the season, but left with one on and one out in the seventh in favor of Michael Tonkin. Tonkin hit Burns with a pitch, to bring the tying run to the plate in Josh Thole. But Tonkin got a pair of fly ball outs to keep the Wings' league-leading 16th shutout intact. Tonkin picked up his 12th save.

Dean pitched 6 1/3 innings, allowed six hits and a walk with two strikeouts. He threw 90 pitches, 61 for strikes and also picked up his second win in two starts against Buffalo.

Game Two:

Logan Darnell made a spot start for the Wings, his third start of the season. Darnell opposed Phillippe Aumont, who allowed a leadoff hit to Byron Buxton to open game two then struck out the next three batters.

Aumont struck out two more batters in a perfect second inning, and Darnell set down the Bisons in order in the second as both starters worked at a brisk pace.

Doug Bernier and Carlos Paulino worked Aumont for walks to open the top of the third inning, and Buxton blooped a single between two fielders to load the bases. James Beresford hit into a double play, but Bernier scored to put the Wings ahead 1-0.

The Bisons tied the score at 1-1 in the fourth. Dalton Pompey singled for Buffalo's first base runner of the game. Pompey stole second, then stole third, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Matt Hague.

Darnell struck out Munenori Kawasaki for the first out of the sixth inning, then exited with right-hander Mark Hamburger taking over on the mound. Hamburger struck out both batters he faced to end the sixth.

Darnell was excellant, working 5 1/3 innings and allowing just one hit and one earned run. Darnell walked one and struck out five.

Aumont pitched six innings and gave up three hits, an earned run and four walks with eight strikeouts. Ryan Tepera took over in the seventh, got two quick outs, then allowed singles to Bernier and Paulino. But Tepera fanned Buxton to strand the runners.

In the bottom of the seventh, Heisey - in his first game since joining the Bisons - homered with two outs, to give the Bisons the win and a split of the doubleheader. Hamburger dropped to 3-2 with the loss, and Tepera improved to 3-1.

The Wings out-hit Buffalo 5-2. Buxton went 2-for-4 in the second game, giving him a hit in each of his first eight games with the Red Wings.
