Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release
Moosic, Pa. - The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (Triple-A/New York Yankees) finished off a four-game sweep of the Pawtucket Red Sox with a 3-2 finish on Thursday night at PNC Field. The RailRiders (68-52) claimed their eighth straight against the PawSox (44-75) and climbed back to .500 (31-31) at home.
SWB received a strong relief effort from Eric Wooten (2-3). The southpaw blanked the PawSox over 5.2 innings behind starter Joel De La Cruz, yielding four hits and two walks with four strikeouts. James Pazos struck out the final batter he faced for his second save. Shawn Haviland shouldered the loss after allowing three runs on six hits over 7.1 innings. He walked two and whiffed three.
The RailRiders grabbed a 2-0 lead in the first inning when Aaron Judge singled home Ben Gamel and Rob Refsnyder on a two-out liner to center. Pawtucket rallied to knot the score at two in the third against De La Cruz. The right-hander yielded two runs on a pair of hits and three walks.
Tied in the last of the eighth, Gamel and Refsnyder and combined on consecutive hits to set the table for Jose Pirela. Reliever Noe Ramirez entered and Pirela slammed a single into right that brought around Gamel. Ramirez would get a double play grounder to escape the inning without further damage.
The RailRiders journey to Rochester for a three-game series with the third place Red Wings (Minnesota Twins) on Friday night. First pitch at Frontier Field is set for 7:05 p.m. Right-hander Brady Lail (1-1, 5.23) faces right-hander Michael Bowden (1-1, 5.74). The RailRiders return to PNC Field on Tuesday, August 18, to host the Lehigh Valley IronPigs and will give away a Mr. Incrediball t-shirt, courtesy of Norwegian Cruise Lines.
