Wichita, KS - Kansas City battled back from a two-goal deficit in the third period and won 4-3 in a shootout over Wichita on Saturday night at INTRUST Bank Arena.
Ryan Van Stralen and Nolan Vesey each scored their first of the season while Steven Iacobellis potted his sixth of the year.
Iacobellis stayed red hot with the first goal of the game at 4:42 of the opening period. During a power play, he caught a pass from Travis Brown and fired a shot through traffic that got through Mason McDonald to make it 1-0. Kansas City answered at 11:29 as David Dziurzynski beat Stuart Skinner with a wrist shot on a breakaway for his sixth of the season.
In the second, Vesey tallied his first of the year at 4:48 to make it 2-1. The Thunder slowed down an odd-man rush and Vesey carried the other way on a three-on-two break. He beat McDonald with a wrist shot with assists to Brown and Larkin.
Van Stralen increased the lead to 3-1 at 3:19 of the third period as he got to a rebound and found a wide open cage. The Mavericks clawed back into the game and cut the lead to one with a goal from Jared VanWormer at 5:34. Darian Dziurzynski tied the game at three at 16:43, finding a loose puck near the crease and recording his fifth of the year. For the second time in the season-series, the two teams headed into overtime.
Wichita carried over a power play chance into overtime as VanWormer was sent off for interference late in the third. Both teams had two shots in the extra session, but couldn't get the go-ahead goal.
In the shootout, Mark Cooper and David Dziurzynski were successful while Steven Iacobellis scored for Wichita. McDonald stopped Van Stralen at the bottom of round four and the game ended with Kansas City taking a 4-3 win.
Wichita suffered its first shootout loss of the season. Iacobellis extended his point-streak to seven games with a goal. Vesey registered his first goal as a pro. Travis Brown added two helpers.
Wichita was 1-for-3 on the power play. Kansas City went 0-for-3 on the man advantage.
The Thunder heads on the road for three of the next four starting Tuesday night in Oklahoma to face the Tulsa Oilers starting at 7:05 p.m. Wichita returns home on Wednesday night to host the Oilers for the first time this season.
