Cincinnati Cyclones News Release
Cincinnati, OH - The Cincinnati Cyclones (10-3-2-0) squeaked by the Kalamazoo Wings, 2-1, on Saturday night. Forward Myles Powell and defenseman Anthony Florentino tallied the goals for Cincinnati, and the two sides combined for 102 minutes of penalties in the game.
Cincinnati wasted little time taking the lead, as just 1:47 into the opening period, forward Alex Wideman beat out an icing in the right corner, and sent a pass to Powell who tipped the puck in as he was crashing the net, giving the Cyclones a 1-0 lead. Kalamazoo managed to tie the game midway through the frame when forward Chris Collins scored the Wings' fifth shorthanded goal of the year to tie the game, 1-1.
The physical battle began in the opening period, as the teams combined for 40 minutes of penalties in the frame. There were a trio of fights in the period, including one off the opening face-off between Cincinnati's Shaw Boomhower and Kalamazoo's Kyle Thomas. There were additional fights involving the Cyclones' Pascal Aquin and Kalamazoo's Luke Sandler, and Cincinnati's Nate Mitton dropping the gloves with the Wings' Zach Saar.
The 1-1 score held up throughout the remainder of the first, and in the second the aggression between the sides continued, as the teams combined for another 58 minutes of penalties in the period. Both teams exchanged quality scoring opportunities, however neither was able to find the back of the net, and the 1-1 scored carried over into the third.
The third saw a more subdued game than what was witnessed in the first two periods, however the intensity was still high. Cincinnati pressured offensively throughout the entire period, and 3:30 remaining, forward Vas Glotovtook a shot that was kicked out by Wings netminder Jake Hildebrand, but Florentino was following up the play and buried in the rebound to give Cincinnati a 2-1 win.
Cincinnati outshot Kalamazoo, 29-27, with goaltender Michael Houser stopping 26 in the win. The Cyclones and Wings square off again on Wednesday evening at U.S. Bank Arena, in the finale of a two-game series. Face-off is scheduled for 7:35pm ET.
